On Saturday, Atishi officially became the Chief Minister of Delhi. She stepped into her role amid growing calls for early elections. This significant event followed just days after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was released on bail from Tihar jail, where he announced his resignation. Both Kejriwal and former deputy Manish Sisodia have sought a “certificate of honesty” from Delhi’s residents before considering a return to office.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena administered Atishi’s oath at Raj Niwas. She is the 8th Chief Minister of Delhi and the first woman to hold the position since Sheila Dikshit. Atishi is also the 17th female chief minister in India, marking a significant milestone in Indian politics.
Atishi welcomed her new Council of Ministers during the ceremony. This team includes Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Ahlawat and current Delhi Ministers Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Imran Hussain. Together, they will tackle challenges as AAP prepares for the upcoming assembly polls.
Atishi’s time in office may be brief, with assembly elections scheduled for February next year. Both AAP and the opposition BJP support moving the elections up by a few months, adding urgency to her leadership.
As Atishi embarks on this journey, she takes on governance responsibilities and becomes a key figure for AAP. The coming months will be crucial, and all eyes will be on her as she navigates the political landscape and addresses the concerns of Delhi’s citizens.
