Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for postponing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee election. He emphasized the need for a Dalit mayor this year and, consequently, accused AAP of undermining Dalit rights and obstructing democracy.
Moreover, Sachdeva stated, “For two years, AAP, led by Kejriwal and Sisodia, has eroded democracy. You won the election but are stalling the court-mandated MCD elections. This year’s election is crucial for a Dalit mayor, yet AAP is stripping away Dalit rights. Clearly, they lack trust in their own councilors.”
In addition, the election was postponed due to AAP councilor protests against a mobile phone ban during the meeting. Consequently, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar rescheduled the election for September 27 at 1 PM. Initially set for September 26, Mayor Shelly Oberoi adjourned it, arguing that elections before October 5 would be illegal.
Furthermore, the MCD reported the situation to Lt. Governor V.K. Saxena, who ordered arrangements for the election and a report on its conduct by September 26 at 10 PM. He specified that if the Mayor could not preside, the Deputy Mayor or the senior-most member should take over.
As a result, the Mayor‘s delay highlights a standstill in decision-making, with the Standing Committee’s absence for 21 months severely impacting municipal functions.
Looking ahead, the Lt. Governor emphasized the need to uphold democratic processes, directing the election for September 27 at 1 PM, overseen by Additional Commissioner Jitender Yadav as Returning Officer. Additionally, the election will be video recorded, and mobile devices will be banned to ensure ballot secrecy.
Ultimately, the upcoming election is pivotal for the MCD and Dalit representation in Delhi governance.
