BJP leader Mushtaq Ahmad Shah Bukhari passes away

Remembering Mushtaq Ahmad Shah Bukhari: A Leader of the Masses

A Sudden Loss

Mushtaq Ahmad Shah Bukhari, a prominent political figure and former minister in Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 75. He collapsed at his home in the Poonch district, and party officials confirmed the tragic news.

He leaves behind his wife, two daughters, and a son, creating a significant loss for his family and a legacy that deeply impacted many lives in the region.

Health Struggles

For some time, Bukhari struggled with health issues. Unfortunately, he suffered a fatal heart attack around 7 a.m. Consequently, this sudden turn of events has left a considerable void in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

Political Journey

Bukhari, a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Surankote, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier this year. His decision to switch parties followed the Central government’s grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to his Pahari community.

This pivotal moment allowed him to advocate more effectively for his people. Furthermore, in the recent elections held on September 25, he received the nomination as the BJP candidate for Surankote, competing alongside candidates in 25 other constituencies.

Breaking Ties with the National Conference

Bukhari‘s political journey included significant changes. For instance, in February 2022, he ended a four-decade association with the National Conference. This decision arose from a disagreement with party president Farooq Abdullah regarding the ST status.

By leaving the National Conference, Bukhari demonstrated his commitment to representing the interests of the Pahari community. Thus, he sought to align himself with a party that could better serve those needs.

Condolences from Political Leaders

In response to his passing, Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina expressed heartfelt condolences. Additionally, leaders from various political parties shared their grief. Raina poignantly stated, “Bukhari was a leader of the masses, and his passing has created a void that will be difficult to fill.”

This sentiment not only underscores the impact Bukhari had on his constituents but also highlights the respect he garnered across party lines.

A Lasting Legacy

As the region mourns the loss of Mushtaq Ahmad Shah Bukhari, people will undoubtedly remember his contributions to politics. His unwavering commitment to his community stands out prominently.

Ultimately, his journey serves as a testament to the complexities of political life in Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of representation and advocacy for marginalized communities.
