Honoring Sitaram Yechury: A Pillar of Indian Politics

Sitaram Yechury, the distinguished General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and former Rajya Sabha MP, passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. He had been battling pneumonia and received care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Despite the extensive medical intervention, including intensive care, his condition deteriorated in recent days.

In a gesture reflecting his lifelong commitment to public service, Yechury’s family has decided to donate his body to AIIMS for teaching and research purposes. His body was moved from AIIMS to his Delhi residence on Friday and will be taken to the CPI(M) central committee office for public viewing on Saturday before being returned to AIIMS in the evening.

The news of his passing has elicited a flood of tributes from leaders across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences, describing Yechury as a “leading light of the Left” and commending his ability to connect across political divides. Modi also acknowledged Yechury’s effective contributions as a parliamentarian.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed sorrow over Yechury’s death, noting his influential role in both student leadership and national politics. She highlighted his ability to build friendships across party lines, offering her heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi praised Yechury as a “powerful champion of secularism” and recognized his crucial role in the formation of the INDIA alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi reflected on his significant impact during the UPA-1 era, remarking that he would be “sorely missed.”

Yechury’s political journey was marked by his leadership of the CPI(M) since 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat. He was mentored by the late Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who played a pivotal role in the coalition politics of the National Front and United Front governments. Yechury’s strategic acumen and commitment to his party’s principles left a lasting imprint on Indian politics.
