Keisham Meghachandra Singh, the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), has received a summons from the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) regarding a money laundering case. Meghachandra‘s lawyer, Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, serves as an advocate at the Manipur High Court and is also an AICC executive member. He spoke to ET about the situation, explaining that Meghachandra received the summons on October 7. Furthermore, the ED requested his presence on the same day in New Delhi, which Meitei deemed impossible due to the short notice.

Official Details of the Summons

The official summons, issued by Amit Kumar, Assistant Director at the ED, emphasized the need for Meghachandra’s attendance. Specifically, it required him to provide evidence and produce records for the investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of 2002.

The document clearly stated, “I require Keisham Meghachandra Singh to appear before me in person. To give evidence and produce the records indicated in the annexure concerning the investigation.”

Accusations of Political Vendetta

Notably, the timing of this summons has led many to accuse the government of political vendetta. For instance, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

He pointed out that Meghachandra has criticized the BJP-led government, specifically targeting the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister, and the Chief Minister of Manipur. Ramesh highlighted their negative impact on the state since May 2023.

Moreover, he condemned the ED‘s action, labeling it as harassment and revenge. Ramesh argued that this move aims to distract from the Union Government’s failures in Manipur, especially since Prime Minister Modi has not visited the state since unrest began 17 months ago.

Solidarity from Party Spokespersons

In response, Bupenda Meitei expressed strong support for Meghachandra. He stated, “Our @INCManipur PCC President @meghachandra_k cannot be silenced by the Modi government and its agencies for speaking the truth.” He stressed their commitment to fighting this matter legally in court.
