As Jammu and Kashmir embarks on a pivotal electoral journey, Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), asserts that the next government cannot form without her party’s involvement.
At a recent rally in Jammu, she declared, “The next government will be secular, and without the PDP, no government can be formed in Jammu and Kashmir.“ This statement highlights her party’s critical role in the current political landscape.
In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s comments labeling political families as “anti-national,” Mufti pointed out her late father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Specifically, during a time when the National Conference discussed joining Pakistan, her father proudly raised the Indian flag in Kashmir.
Furthermore, in the first phase of elections in South Kashmir, the PDP has emerged as a leading party. This development signals strong grassroots support as voters rally behind them. Consequently, Mufti stated, “These elections are crucial for the future of J&K,” emphasizing the need for informed voting.
In addition, Mufti criticized the BJP‘s focus on opposition rather than constructive engagement. She remarked, “Top BJP leaders, including the Prime Minister and Home Minister, come here, but their efforts seem solely aimed at opposing us. They have nothing to offer the people.” This criticism underscores her concerns about the BJP‘s approach.
Moreover, reflecting on her father’s contributions, Mufti noted that he championed the integrity of India in Kashmir. She emphasized, “When the National Conference campaigned for independence and spoke of joining Pakistan, it was Mufti Sahab who proudly raised the Indian flag in Kashmir.“
Today marks the start of voting for 239 candidates across 26 constituencies. This election is significant as it represents the first assembly election in a decade. It follows over six years of Central rule and the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Looking forward, officials have scheduled the final phase of polling for October 1, with vote counting set for October 8. Reflecting on the past, Mufti stated, “Mufti Sahab led the government in Jammu and Kashmir for over three years, a time often called a golden period.”
Furthermore, she emphasized that her party provided an MP, an MLC, and an MLA to Jammu. “Which other party can claim that?” she challenged, reinforcing her party’s accomplishments.
Finally, Mufti noted that appointing a governor from Jammu could have fostered greater respect and cooperation from the people of Kashmir. Ultimately, she argued that this would have reduced opposition.
As the election unfolds, the PDP‘s influence and vision for Jammu and Kashmir will play a crucial role in shaping the region’s political landscape for years to come.
