To be eligible to vote in India, you must be a citizen of India, at least 18 years old, and have a valid voter ID issued by the Election Commission of India. You must also be registered in the electoral roll of your constituency.
If you are a first-time voter or have changed your residence, you need to register to vote.
To register online, visit the official National Voters’ Service Portal at https://www.nvsp.in. Select Form 6, which is meant for new voter registration. Fill in your details, including your name, age, gender, and address. Upload the required documents, such as a passport-size photo, proof of age, and proof of address. Once you have submitted the form, you will receive a reference number that allows you to track your application status.
To register offline, visit your nearest electoral office and collect a physical copy of Form 6. Fill in the form with the necessary details and attach the required documents. Submit the form to the Booth Level Officer, who will verify and process your application.
To check if your name is on the electoral roll, visit https://electoralsearch.eci.gov.in and enter your details. This ensures that you are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections.
On election day, find your assigned polling booth using the Voter Helpline App or the Election Commission of India website. Carry your voter ID along with an additional identity proof if required. Once at the polling station, verify your identity with the polling officer. Your finger will be marked with ink to indicate that you have voted. Then, proceed to the electronic voting machine and press the button corresponding to your chosen candidate. Once you cast your vote, collect your slip and leave the polling station.
If you do not have a voter ID, you can still vote using an approved alternative identity proof such as an Aadhaar card, passport, or driving license, as per the Election Commission’s guidelines.
