Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: A Pivotal Second Phase

This Wednesday, over 2.5 million voters in Jammu and Kashmir will play a crucial role in shaping the region’s future. They will head to the polls to choose from 239 candidates vying for 26 assembly seats. Notably, these constituencies are spread across six districts, with three located in the Valley and three in the Jammu division.

Ensuring a Smooth Voting Experience

To facilitate a seamless voting experience, the Election Commission of India has established an impressive 3,502 polling stations. Specifically, this includes 1,056 urban stations and 2,446 rural stations. Additionally, all polling locations will feature webcasting facilities, which aim to enhance transparency and allow for real-time monitoring of the voting process.

Special Polling Stations for Increased Participation

Moreover, to boost voter turnout, 157 special polling stations have been set up for this phase. These include:

• 26 ‘Pink Polling Stations’ managed by women.
• 26 Polling Stations staffed by persons with disabilities.
• 26 Youth-Run Polling Stations.
• 31 Border Polling Stations.
• 26 Green Polling Stations.
• 22 Unique Polling Stations.

Voting will occur from 7 AM to 6 PM, thereby providing ample time for citizens to cast their votes.

Key Candidates to Watch

Among the prominent candidates are former chief minister Omar Abdullah, JKPCC president Tariq Hamid Karra, and BJP J&K chief Ravinder Raina. Specifically, Abdullah is contesting from the Ganderbal and Budgam seats, while Karra aims for Central Shalteng. Meanwhile, Raina seeks to retain his Nowshera seat in Rajouri district, which he previously won in the 2014 assembly elections.

This phase, therefore, will be particularly notable. Jailed separatist leader Sarjan Ahmad Wagay, also known as Barkati, hopes to replicate Engineer Rashid‘s parliamentary success against Abdullah. In fact, Barkati is contesting in the Beerwah and Ganderbal segments, making this a highly anticipated showdown.

A Look at Other Notable Candidates

In addition, other candidates include Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari (Channapora) and former ministers such as Ali Mohammad Sagar (Khanyar) and Abdul Rahim Rather (Chrar-i-Sharief). Furthermore, Choudhary Zulfikar Ali (Budhal) and Syed Mushtaq Bukhari (Surankote) will also be in the race. Notably, Zulfikar Ali and Mushtaq Bukhari are contesting on BJP tickets this time, which adds another layer of interest to the election.

Recap of the First Phase and Future Phases

Looking back, the first phase of polling, held on September 18, saw an estimated 61.38% voter turnout. This sets a positive tone for the upcoming phases. Importantly, the third phase is scheduled for October 1, with vote counting slated for October 8.

In this current phase, there are 93 candidates contesting in Srinagar district. Following that, there are 46 in Budgam, 34 in Rajouri, 25 in Poonch, 21 in Ganderbal, and 20 in Reasi district. Key constituencies in Srinagar include Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Lal Chowk, Channapora, Zadibal, Central Shalteng, and Eidgah.

Additionally, in Budgam district, segments include Budgam, Beerwah, Khansahib, Chrar-I-Sharief, and Chadoora. Meanwhile, Ganderbal features Kangan (ST) and Ganderbal. Lastly, in the Jammu division, the seats up for election include Gulabgarh (ST), Reasi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (in Reasi district), Kalakote-Sunderbani, Nowshera, Rajouri (ST) (in Rajouri district), Budhal (ST), Thannamandi (ST), Surankote (ST), Poonch Haveli, and Mendhar (ST) (in Poonch district).

As the election unfolds, all eyes will indeed be on the voters and candidates. This marks a significant chapter in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, one that will ultimately shape its future.
