Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal recently made headlines with a forceful address in the Delhi Assembly. This marked his first appearance since being released on bail. During his speech, he sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He suggested that the Opposition must be “sad” to see him and his ally Manish Sisodia in the Assembly.
Kejriwal‘s remarks followed his release from prison, where he had been held in connection with the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on September 13. Notably, he wasted no time asserting his position. “My colleagues in the opposition must be sad to see Manish Sisodia and me here,” he stated. He added, “While PM Modi is very powerful and has many resources, he is not God. The true God is with us. I want to express my gratitude to the Supreme Court.”
Moreover, Kejriwal emphasized his dedication to improving Delhi’s infrastructure. He discussed a recent road inspection he conducted with the current Chief Minister. He pointed out that the roads at Delhi University had deteriorated during his time in jail. “I’ve requested her to issue an order to repair them,” he said, showing his commitment to getting things back on track.
Additionally, Kejriwal recounted a recent conversation with a BJP leader. He asked about the benefits of his imprisonment. The leader responded that they had “derailed the entire Delhi government,” which only fueled Kejriwal’s resolve. “I felt sad and angry,” he reflected, arguing that the BJP aimed to defame the AAP to gain votes.
Furthermore, he highlighted missed opportunities for progress under the central government. “You could have built 5,000 Mohalla clinics. Manish Sisodia created 700 schools, so you could have constructed 7,000 schools instead of trying to hinder our work,” he stated. He firmly believed that people will vote based on accomplishments, not on efforts to block them.
Kejriwal‘s journey has indeed been tumultuous. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, due to a money laundering investigation related to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy for 2021-22. Subsequently, on June 26, he faced additional charges from the CBI while still in ED custody. Following his bail on September 13, he resigned as Chief Minister, marking a significant shift in his political career.
As Kejriwal steps back into the political arena, his focus on governance and accountability remains clear. His recent statements indicate a strong commitment to addressing the challenges facing Delhi. Ultimately, only time will tell how this chapter unfolds for him and the AAP.
