Kolkata: On Friday, January 10, 2026, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha members demonstrated against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her actions after the ED raids at the I-PAC office and its chief Pratik Jain’s home. | In relation to an alleged coal smuggling case that stretches back a few years, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office and Pratik Jain’s home on Loudon Street in Kolkata on Thursday, January 8, 2025. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a protest against the ED raids on I-PAC after the raid set off a political storm in the state. Why is a chief minister endorsing Pratik Jain, and who is he? Pratik Jain, a political strategist and co-founder of I-PAC, is a graduate of IIT Bombay. He is credited with helping I-PAC grow into one of the most significant political consulting organizations in India.
I-PAC was established in 2015 and offers services like data-driven campaign management, support for governance, and voter outreach initiatives. It has collaborated with a number of Indian political groups throughout the years, notably West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). I-PAC reportedly collaborates closely with Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, and his office. The company oversees the IT and media division of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC and is in charge of creating its election campaigns. Mr. Jain was in charge of the Trinamool Congress’s IT cell, according to Ms. Banerjee.
According to his LinkedIn page, Jain, an engineering graduate from IIT Bombay, started his career as an analyst at the consulting firm Deloitte. He was one of the first members of Citizens of Accountable Governance, which later evolved into I-PAC. Arvind Kejriwal, M.K. Stalin, Jaganmohan Reddy, Uddhav Thackeray, Rahul Gandhi, and Nitish Kumar are just a few of the prominent figures with whom the political consultancy firm has collaborated. The company collaborated with Gujarat’s then-chief minister, Narendra Modi, on a number of events, and the campaigns helped the BJP to a resounding victory in 2014. Why is Pratik Jain being scrutinized by ED? As part of a 2020 case filed by the CBI against a coal smuggling syndicate headed by Anup Majhi, also known as “Lala,” who allegedly stole and illegally excavated coal from the Eastern Coalfield leasehold areas in and around Asansol in Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, the Directorate of Enforcement said in a statement on January 8 that raids were conducted on ten locations, six in West Bengal and four in Delhi.
Tens of crores of rupees were transferred to Indian PAC Consulting Pvt Ltd, the registered business of political consulting firm I-PAC, via a hawala operator connected to coal smuggling. The ED has said that “I-PAC is also one of the entities associated to Hawala money.”
What specifically took place during the ED raids? After Ms. Banerjee visited Mr. Jain’s home during the operation and claimed that the central authorities were trying to take important party-related data, the raid swiftly turned into a political drama. The ED responded by accusing her of taking important evidence out of both places.
Enforcement orders regarding the West Bengal ED raids | EDITORIAL Ahead of the Assembly elections, the TMC has also accused the Center of abusing investigative agencies to threaten their political rivals. The BJP has repeatedly denied this accusation.
Political responses Mehbooba Mufti, president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), claimed on Thursday, January 8, that the BJP’s “desperation” was evident in the Central agencies’ actions in West Bengal prior to the election. On Friday, January 9, 2026, the BJP denounced Ms. Banerjee for her actions during the ED raids at a private consultancy firm in Kolkata, claiming that she attempted to “rescue something sensitive” that would have implicated her and her party in the money laundering case connected to the alleged coal smuggling.
On Friday, January 9, 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Ms. Banerjee for her behavior during the ED searches, calling it “very troubling” and undermining public respect.
