A special court in Pune has summoned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case. Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, filed this case. The legal action arises from allegations that Gandhi made inappropriate remarks about Savarkar during a speech in London.
On Friday, the court issued the summons, requiring Gandhi to appear in person on October 23. Satyaki Savarkar initially lodged the complaint against the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha last year. As a result, the court transferred the case from the Judicial Magistrate First Class (FMFC) court to the special court designated for MPs and MLAs.
Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, who represents Satyaki Savarkar, informed that the special court, presided over by Joint Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde, emphasized the need for Gandhi‘s presence. Specifically, he must address a charge under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In his complaint, Satyaki Savarkar alleged that during his March 2023 speech in London, Gandhi claimed that V.D. Savarkar wrote about an incident in which he and friends assaulted a Muslim man. Gandhi suggested that Savarkar felt pleased about this incident. However, Satyaki Savarkar firmly denied that any such event occurred. He asserted that V.D. Savarkar never made such statements, labeling Gandhi’s allegations as “fictitious, false, and malicious”.
Following the complaint, the court directed the police to investigate the claims. Consequently, the Vishrambaug police station conducted an inquiry and concluded that prima facie evidence supports Satyaki Savarkar‘s complaint.
As this case unfolds, it sheds light on the ongoing tensions in Indian politics. Moreover, it brings the complexities surrounding historical figures and their legacies to the forefront.
