Abdullah says, ‘Government should pass resolution for statehood’

The Path Ahead for Jammu and Kashmir: Omar Abdullah’s Vision for Statehood

Urgent Call for Restoration of Statehood

On Wednesday, Omar Abdullah, the vice president of the National Conference, emphasized the urgent need for the newly formed government in Jammu and Kashmir to push for the restoration of statehood. He called for the government to adopt a resolution and present it to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister in New Delhi. Abdullah urged them to take prompt action on this pressing issue.

A Firm Political Stance

Abdullah reaffirmed that the National Conference‘s political stance remains resolute. He stated, “Once the government is established, the Cabinet should pass a resolution”. Following this, the Chief Minister should travel to Delhi to engage with senior leaders, including the Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Moreover, Abdullah cautioned against expecting the restoration of Article 370 from those who previously abrogated it. He noted, “It would be naive to think that”. He added, “We have no intention of misleading the public. We won’t back down and will continue to keep this issue at the forefront”. Importantly, he highlighted that a change in the national government could open new avenues for dialogue regarding Jammu and Kashmir’s concerns.

Commitment to Regional Equity

As discussions about government formation progress, Abdullah outlined the first step: a meeting of legislators. After this meeting, they will consult with their alliance partner, the Congress party. Then, they will choose a leader to present a letter of support to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. This action will formally stake a claim to form the government and request a date for the oath-taking ceremony.

Furthermore, Abdullah acknowledged the significant divide between the Kashmir and Jammu divisions. He stressed that the new government must foster a sense of ownership among the people of Jammu. “The upcoming administration will serve all residents of Jammu and Kashmir,” he asserted. He emphasized, “We will particularly focus on areas with fewer MLAs in the government,” which shows a commitment to addressing regional disparities.

Reflections on the Recent Elections

Reflecting on the recent elections, Abdullah pointed out that certain parties and independent candidates seemed strategically placed to divide votes. He observed that 40% of the candidates were independents, most of whom faced defeat. Notably, some have since reached out to rejoin the National Conference.

A Collaborative Future with Congress

In addition, J&K Congress chief Tariq Karra, who won from Shalteng, visited Abdullah to convey greetings from the Congress leadership. Karra reinforced their commitment to tackle contentious issues once the government is formed. He declared, “This mandate reflects opposition to the oppressive and repressive policies of the BJP and their divisive rhetoric at social, cultural, and religious levels”.

Conclusion: A Determined Path Forward

As the new government takes shape, the emphasis on unity, representation, and regional equity will prove pivotal. These elements will play a crucial role in addressing the challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir. Ultimately, Abdullah’s call to action sets a tone of determination and hope for the region’s future.
