On Saturday, September 21, Atishi will officially take the oath of office as Delhi’s Chief Minister at approximately 4:30 PM. Accompanying her will be key leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Mukesh Ahlawat, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Imran Hussain, who will also be sworn in as ministers.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Raj Niwas and is expected to be a relatively low-key event, reflecting the circumstances surrounding the recent resignation of Arvind Kejriwal.
AAP have indicated that the four ministers retained in the new cabinet will likely continue in their previous roles. Meanwhile, Mukesh Ahlawat, a first-time MLA from Sultanpur Majra, is anticipated to take over the departments left vacant after the resignation of minister Raaj Kumar Anand back in April.
This transition comes after Kejriwal resigned on September 17, a decision that cleared the path for Atishi’s appointment as his successor. His recommendation of her name was made during a meeting with party legislators, showcasing a level of trust and confidence in her leadership.
In a striking move, AAP leader Sanjay Singh announced that Kejriwal plans to forgo his security and leave the chief minister’s residence to live as a “common man.” He emphasized that Kejriwal intends to relinquish all the privileges associated with the role, including security, to connect more closely with the people of Delhi.
Kejriwal’s resignation followed his release from Tihar Jail on September 13, where he had spent over five months linked to the excise policy case. Just two days after his release, he shocked many by announcing his resignation, citing the BJP’s “mudslinging” campaign against him over corruption allegations. He has expressed a desire to return to the chief minister’s office after receiving a “certificate of honesty” from the people in the upcoming assembly polls.
Atishi’s government is likely to face challenges ahead, as the assembly elections are scheduled for February next year, making her tenure relatively short. During this period, her administration will need to act swiftly to approve several pending policies and welfare schemes, including the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, and the doorstep delivery of services.
As Delhi prepares for this new leadership, all eyes will be on Atishi and her cabinet as they embark on their mission to serve the people of Delhi during this pivotal time.
