Haryana Assembly Elections reveal that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has postponed the voting date from October 1 to October 5, with the election results now scheduled for October 8, 2024. This change was made to respect the significance of the Asoj Amavasya festival for the Bishnoi community, ensuring they can fully participate in the electoral process without their voting rights being affected.
The decision has led to varied political reactions. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed approval, viewing it as a necessary adjustment, while opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress(INC), have criticized the rescheduling, suggesting it may indicate the BJP’s concerns about the potential election results.
The BJP had advocated for the date change due to concerns that the original date might coincide with a long holiday period, which could reduce voter turnout. The ECI took these considerations into account, alongside the festival, before finalizing the new schedule.
