Land for Job Money Laundering Case: Recent Developments

On Wednesday, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court took significant steps in the ongoing land-for-job money laundering case, issuing summons to former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Tej Pratap Yadav, and several other individuals implicated in the scandal. The court has directed these individuals, along with Akhileshwar Singh and his wife Kiran Devi, to appear on October 7.

Akhileshwar Singh, who serves as a director of AK Infosys Limited, is also among those summoned. Notably, this marks the first time Tej Pratap Yadav has been called to respond to allegations related to the land-for-job scheme.

Background of the Case

The case centers on Group-D appointments made within the West Central Zone of the railways in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, during Lalu Prasad‘s tenure as railway minister from 2004 to 2009. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims that these appointments were secured in exchange for land parcels, which were allegedly gifted or transferred by recruits to Lalu’s family or associates.

Recent Court Proceedings

In a related development, the Delhi High Court recently granted regular bail to businessman Amit Katyal, who has been charged in the land-for-job money laundering case. Katyal had been in custody since his arrest in November 2023 and is also a witness in a connected CBI case. His defense argued that his health had deteriorated during his time in custody and that he had undergone surgery.

On September 7, the Rouse Avenue Court postponed its decision regarding the summons for Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and other accused individuals, indicating ongoing legal proceedings and scrutiny.

Supplementary Charge Sheet

The situation escalated on August 6, when the Enforcement Directorate filed a supplementary charge sheet that included Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi, and a number of others such as Lallan Chaudhary, Hazari Rai, Dharmender Kumar, the late Lal Babu Rai, Sonmatia Devi, the late Kishun Dev Rai, and Sanjay Rai. This charge sheet comprises 96 supporting documents, highlighting the extensive evidence gathered in the investigation.
