The Jammu-Kashmir State Election Commission has taken significant actions during the recent assembly polls. They suspended 23 government officials and confiscated Rs 130 crores to enforce the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) guidelines.
In addition to the suspensions, the commission transferred 20 employees to different tehsils and districts due to complaints about their actions favoring specific political parties. They also disengaged six contractual and ad hoc employees for violating MCC regulations.
The election office reported substantial seizures totaling Rs 130 crores. The Police Department accounted for the largest share, seizing Rs 107.50 crores. Other agencies also made notable contributions, including the Central Goods and Services Tax Department, which seized Rs 9.88 crores, and the State Goods and Services Tax Department, which seized Rs 8.03 crores.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of J&K, stated that approximately 7,088 permissions went to political parties and candidates. These permissions covered activities like rallies, processions, and the opening of party offices. They also included vehicle use and the display of banners, flags, and pamphlets.
Additionally, the commission issued permissions for street corner meetings, door-to-door canvassing, and the use of helicopters and video vans for star campaigners and party officials.
Pole reported that out of 1,263 MCC violations, the commission closed 600 cases after thorough investigations. Currently, investigators are looking into 364 cases, which they expect to resolve soon.
