Telangana’s Vision for Urban Development: A Meeting with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar

In a significant step for Telangana‘s infrastructure, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met with Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar in Delhi on Monday. During this meeting, the focus was on seeking the central government’s support for key state projects aimed at improving living conditions in Hyderabad and its surroundings.

Addressing Sewage System Challenges

First and foremost, a central topic was the need to incorporate Hyderabad’s Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan (CSMP) into the AMRUT 2.0 initiative. This mission aims to enhance urban infrastructure by ensuring universal access to water supply and sewage management.

Moreover, CM Reddy highlighted the inadequacies of existing sewage systems, particularly in neighboring municipalities. He pointed out that Hyderabad continues to rely on an outdated sewerage system, which struggles to meet current demands.

Furthermore, the CSMP covers an extensive area, impacting both Hyderabad and 27 nearby municipalities. With an estimated cost of Rs 17,212.69 crore, the plan aims for 100% wastewater treatment. This is vital for maintaining and enhancing the city’s global living standards. In light of this, CM Reddy presented the detailed project report (DPR) to Minister Khattar, advocating for financial assistance through AMRUT 2.0 or recognition as a special project.

Protecting the Musi River

In addition to the CSMP, CM Reddy also submitted a DPR focused on constructing trunk sewers, large box drains, and new sewage treatment plants. This initiative, which has an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore, aims to prevent pollution in the Musi River. The river flows through Hyderabad for 55 kilometers, and currently, 110 kilometers of sewage drains into it.

Consequently, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of obtaining prompt approval and permission to start this essential work. Effective management of sewage is critical not only for public health but also for preserving the environment.

Expanding Metro Rail Connectivity

Additionally, another key request from CM Reddy was for assistance with the expansion of Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2. This expansion is crucial for improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion.

To this end, DPRs have already been completed for several important corridors, including:

• Nagole to Shamshabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (36.8 km)
• Raidurgam to Kokapet Neopolis (11.6 km)
• MG Bus Station to Chandrayangutta (7.5 km)
• Miyapur to Patancheru (13.4 km)
• LB Nagar to Hayathnagar (7.1 km)

In total, these expansions cover 76.4 kilometers, with an estimated cost of Rs 24,269 crore.
