Politics:
The Indian state of Telangana was established in 2014, having previously been part of Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana movement was crucial in the formation of the new state, with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which led the movement post-2001, forming the government in the Telangana Legislative Assembly under that times Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. The political landscape of Telangana is predominantly influenced by the Indian National Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) are also significant players in the state’s politics.
The Indian National Congress primarily draws its support from rural areas, while the BRS and AIMIM have strong bases in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) region and its surroundings.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) once held considerable influence in the state but have since lost much of their prominence and are now largely focused on residual Andhra Pradesh.
Telangana Movement:
In the early Telangana movement, Marri Chenna Reddy established the Telangana Praja Samithi (TPS) to lead the campaign for a separate Telangana state. However, a major split in the party occurred in November 1969, which led to the decline of the movement. Within two years, the TPS was dissolved, and its members rejoined the Indian National Congress (INC).
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), a successor party, was founded in 2001 by Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR). On November 29, 2009, KCR initiated a fast-until-death, demanding that the Congress party introduce a bill for the formation of Telangana in Parliament. This protest gained widespread support from student organizations, employee unions, and various groups. Amid widespread general strikes that disrupted economic activity in Telangana, the Telangana Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on February 18, 2014, and in the Rajya Sabha on the same day. On March 4, 2014, the Government of India officially declared June 2 as Telangana Formation Day.
Elections:
The 2014 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election took place on April 30, 2014, while the state was still unified. The results, declared on May 16, 2014, showed that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) won a decisive majority in the Telangana region. Consequently, the TRS formed the first government of Telangana when the new Telangana Legislative Assembly was convened. The party, led by K. Chandrashekar Rao, won an increased majority in the 2018 Telangana Legislative Assembly election, with Rao continuing as Chief Minister.
The primary opposition party in Telangana has been the Indian National Congress(INC) . Other significant challengers include the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Following the 2018 assembly elections, a new political party, the India Janshakti Party, was established in 2019. Founded by Awadesh Panty and Nilesh Takhar from Uttar Pradesh, along with Telangana activist Bandi Srinivas, who had previously contested as an independent candidate in the Karimnagar assembly election in 2018, the India Janshakti Party aimed to provide a new political alternative in the region. Bandi Srinivas later became the Telangana state president of the party.

Political Disputes:
Since its formation, Telangana has faced several political disputes. The initial Telangana statehood movement saw internal disagreements among leaders and factions, complicating the quest for separate statehood. Following the creation of Telangana, significant disputes emerged with the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh, particularly concerning water sharing from the Krishna and Godavari rivers and the division of assets and financial resources. Additionally, within Telangana, there have been ongoing conflicts over the allocation of resources between urban and rural areas, and challenges related to administrative efficiency and governance. These disputes have shaped the political landscape of Telangana and continue to influence its development and inter-state relations.
