Politics:

Madhya Pradesh has a 230-seat state legislative assembly. The state also sends 40 members to the Parliament of India, with 29 elected to the Lok Sabha (Lower House) and 11 to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House). The Governor, appointed by the President of India, serves as the constitutional head of the state. The Chief Minister, the elected leader of the state legislature, holds executive powers. Currently, Mangubhai C. Patel is the Governor, and Mohan Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the Chief Minister.

The political landscape of Madhya Pradesh can be described as follows:

  • Post-Independence (1950s–1970s): The Indian National Congress (INC) dominated the state’s politics, with prominent leaders like Ravishankar Shukla and Kailash Nath Katju serving as Chief Ministers. However, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), the precursor to the BJP, began gaining influence in the 1960s.
  • Shifting Tides (1980s–1990s): This period witnessed the rise of regional parties and national alternatives. The Janata Party (JP), Janata Dal (JD), and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) emerged as challengers to the INC’s dominance.
  • Bi-polar Politics (2000s–present): Since the early 2000s, a two-party system has taken hold, with the BJP and INC emerging as the main contenders, though smaller parties occasionally make an impact.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) are the dominant political parties in Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, the state’s unicameral legislative house, comprises 230 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), elected directly from single-seat constituencies, and includes one nominated member. The assembly’s term lasts five years unless dissolved earlier.

Significant events in the recent history of the Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly include:

  • 1 February 2016: The assembly banned the use of English for government purposes, mandating that Hindi be used exclusively for all official matters. Instructions were also issued to prevent harassment of employees who do not know English.
  • 4 December 2017: The assembly passed a landmark bill unanimously, instituting the death penalty for those found guilty of raping girls aged 12 and below.

These decisions reflect the assembly’s focus on both promoting Hindi in government operations and implementing stringent measures to protect children.
