The Assembly consists of 90 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), all of whom are directly elected from single-member constituencies. The Assembly’s term lasts for 5 years, unless it is dissolved earlier.

\The key political players in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh include the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC), and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

History:

The state of Chhattisgarh was established by the Madhya Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2000, which was approved by the President of India on 25 August 2000. The Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha came into existence with the formation of the state on 1 November 2000. The first session of the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha was held at Jashpur Hall in Rajkumar College, Raipur. Subsequently, the Vidhan Sabha was relocated to the newly constructed Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha Bhavan at Vidhan Nagar on the Raipur–Baloda Bazar Road.

A new Vidhan Sabha building is under construction in Sector 19, Atal Nagar, behind Indravati Bhawan and Mahanadi Bhawan. The groundbreaking ceremony for this building was conducted by Bhupesh Baghel on 29 August 2020, in the presence of leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and other ministers. However, construction has been halted since 2021, with all tenders canceled by the Government of Chhattisgarh due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The inauguration is now expected to take place on or after 2025.

The Government of Chhattisgarh, also known as the State Government of Chhattisgarh, is the supreme governing authority of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh and its 33 districts. It consists of three branches: the executive, led by the Governor of Chhattisgarh; the judiciary; and the legislative branch.

As in other Indian states, the Governor of Chhattisgarh serves as the head of state and is appointed by the President of India on the advice of the central government. The role of the governor is largely ceremonial. The Chief Minister, who is the head of government, holds most of the executive powers. Raipur, the state capital, is home to the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and the state secretariat. The Chhattisgarh High Court, located in Bilaspur, has jurisdiction over the entire state.

The current Legislative Assembly of Chhattisgarh is unicameral, comprising 91 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), of which 90 are elected and one is nominated. The Assembly’s term is five years unless dissolved earlier.
