BSP leader Mayawati recently voiced her disappointment about the Jat community’s lack of support for her party in the Haryana assembly elections. During a visit to the national capital, she commemorated the death anniversary of party founder Kanshi Ram. She stressed the need for a shift in perceptions toward Dalits within the Jat community.
Mayawati noted that the Jat community chose to support the Congress in an effort to counter the BJP. This decision ultimately sidelined the BSP. While Dalit votes shifted to the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), the Jat votes did not come her way.
“BSP candidates received only Dalit votes. If we had secured even two to three percent of Jat votes, we could have won a few seats,” she remarked to reporters.
She highlighted a key difference between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, the Jat community’s attitude toward Dalits has evolved, but a similar change has yet to occur in Haryana. This disconnect contributed to the BSP‘s struggles in the recent elections.
The INLD managed to secure only two seats, while the BSP failed to win any.
Despite expectations, the ruling BJP achieved a hat-trick by retaining power. They successfully thwarted the Congress‘s attempt at a comeback. With their best performance yet, the BJP won 48 seats—11 more than the Congress.
Looking ahead, Mayawati expressed optimism for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls scheduled for February next year. She believes that a triangular contest involving the ruling AAP, BJP, and Congress could create opportunities for the BSP.
However, Mayawati acknowledged that the BSP often struggles in direct contests, especially outside Uttar Pradesh.
In addition to Delhi, she announced that the BSP plans to contest elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, expected to take place next month.
As the political landscape shifts, Mayawati is focused on reestablishing the BSP‘s presence in these key states, hoping for a better outcome in the future.
