About the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly
Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly
The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, also known as the Andhra Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, is the lower house of the bicameral legislature of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The Assembly is located in Amaravati, the state's capital region, and plays a central role in the state's democratic and legislative system.
The Assembly consists of 175 elected members representing constituencies across Andhra Pradesh. The current 16th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly was constituted following the 2024 Assembly elections, in which the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured a decisive majority.
Government and leadership
N. Chandrababu Naidu serves as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, leading the TDP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. The governing alliance includes the Telugu Desam Party, Jana Sena Party and Bharatiya Janata Party.
Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu serves as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He presides over House proceedings, maintains order during debates and oversees legislative business.
The Assembly does not have an officially recognised Leader of the Opposition. The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is the principal opposition party in the House. It won 11 seats in the 2024 Assembly elections, below the numerical threshold for recognition as the official opposition.
Electoral composition
In the 2024 Assembly elections, the TDP won 135 seats, the Jana Sena Party secured 21 seats and the BJP won eight seats. Together, the NDA alliance secured 164 of the Assembly's 175 seats.
The YSRCP won 11 seats and became the principal opposition party. The election marked a major political change in Andhra Pradesh, bringing the TDP-led alliance back to power.
Legislative responsibilities
The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly is responsible for debating and passing state laws, approving the annual budget and examining government policies. Its work covers agriculture, education, healthcare, irrigation, industrial development, employment, infrastructure, transport and public welfare.
Members represent their constituencies, raise public concerns and participate in legislative discussions on the state's development priorities.
Political significance
Andhra Pradesh is an important state in southern India, with major priorities including capital development, irrigation projects, industrial investment, agriculture and employment generation. The Legislative Assembly plays a key role in shaping these policies and holding the state government accountable.
The 2024 election gave the TDP-led NDA a substantial legislative majority, allowing it to form the government under Chandrababu Naidu.
Term and next election
The current 16th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly was elected in 2024 and has a regular five-year term covering 2024–2029. The next regular Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election is expected in 2029, subject to constitutional and electoral developments.
