History & Achievements
History
The Telangana Legislature came into existence as a separate state legislature on 2 June 2014. The Legislative Assembly has 119 members, while the Legislative Council has 40 members.
The Telangana movement became one of the most significant regional political movements in modern Indian history. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), founded by K. Chandrashekar Rao, became the principal political force behind the movement and played a major role in achieving statehood.
Following the creation of Telangana in 2014, K. Chandrashekar Rao became the state's first Chief Minister. His government focused on irrigation, agriculture, welfare programmes, Hyderabad's development and large infrastructure projects.
The 2018 Assembly election returned the TRS government for a second term. In 2020, the TRS strengthened its position in the state's local political landscape, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election.
In 2023, the political landscape changed significantly. The Indian National Congress won the Assembly election and formed the government, with A. Revanth Reddy becoming Chief Minister. The BRS became the principal opposition force. The current official Assembly records list Revanth Reddy as the Kodangal MLA and include BRS legislators such as K. T. Rama Rao, T. Harish Rao and K. Chandrashekar Rao.
The Telangana Assembly has remained an important forum for debates on irrigation, agriculture, employment, welfare, urban development, education, healthcare, industrialisation and Hyderabad's growth.
Telangana also has a Legislative Council, making it one of India's states with a bicameral legislature. The state has developed a competitive political environment involving the Congress, BRS, BJP, AIMIM and other political parties.
