History & Achievements

History
Rajasthan's democratic legislative history developed alongside the integration of the princely states after Independence. The first democratic governments were formed during the various stages of Rajasthan's integration in 1948. The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly subsequently developed into the state's principal elected legislative institution.
The First Rajasthan Legislative Assembly began in 1952. Since then, the Assembly has played an important role in legislation, budgetary policy, administration and debates on the state's development priorities. The Assembly has experienced periods of Congress and BJP government, along with the participation of regional and smaller political parties.
The state has historically been one of India's important two-party political battlegrounds, with the Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the principal competing parties. Other parties, including the Bahujan Samaj Party, Rashtriya Loktantrik Party and Bharat Adivasi Party, have also secured representation at different times.
The present 16th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly is the current House. The official Assembly records identify Bhajan Lal Sharma as Chief Minister and Tika Ram Jully as Leader of Opposition.
The BJP currently forms the state government, while Congress is the principal opposition party. The Assembly's political debates cover agriculture, water, education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, tourism, industrial development, rural development and social welfare.
Rajasthan's political history has also been shaped by prominent leaders including Mohan Lal Sukhadia, Haridev Joshi, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Ashok Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was an important BJP leader and served multiple terms as Chief Minister, while Ashok Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje each served multiple terms as Chief Minister.
The state's electoral politics has frequently been characterised by changes in government between the major parties, making Rajasthan an important state in national political analysis. Recent civic elections have also continued to demonstrate strong competition between BJP and Congress.

Congress Launches ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ Campaign Over SIR Electoral Roll Revisions
Congress’s campaign shifts its SIR criticism from political statements to booth-level mobilisation, with the party planning to identify affected voters and assist eligible people with re-enrolment. The use of “vote rakshaks” and household outreach indicates an effort to turn the electoral-roll dispute into a grassroots campaign. The controversy remains politically contested: Congress alleges large-scale voter deletions and demands accountability from the Election Commission, while the poll panel maintains that the SIR process follows the applicable legal and statutory framework. The scale and organisation of the campaign could keep electoral-roll transparency and voter registration at the centre of the Opposition’s political agenda.
