History
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was founded in 1972 as a political movement representing the interests of tribal communities and other historically marginalised groups in the Jharkhand region. The movement was closely associated with the demand for a separate State of Jharkhand from Bihar.
The party's early leadership included Shibu Soren, Binod Bihari Mahato and A. K. Roy, who played important roles in organising the Jharkhand movement.
The JMM became one of the principal political forces behind the movement for a separate Jharkhand State. After decades of political mobilisation and agitation, Jharkhand was created as a separate State on 15 November 2000.
Following statehood, the JMM became an important force in Jharkhand politics. Shibu Soren served as Chief Minister on three occasions, while his son Hemant Soren emerged as the party's principal younger leader.
Hemant Soren first became Chief Minister in 2013 and later returned to the position after the 2019 Assembly election. He also led the party during the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly election, after which the JMM-led alliance formed the State government.
Achievements
The JMM's most significant historical contribution is its role in the movement for the creation of Jharkhand State and its continued political focus on tribal and regional issues.
The party has consistently raised issues involving tribal rights, land ownership, forests, displacement, employment and protection of Jharkhand's natural resources.
The JMM has also promoted welfare and development programmes targeting rural communities, tribal populations and economically weaker sections.
Under Hemant Soren's leadership, the party has focused on social welfare, education, healthcare, employment, rural development and support for women and vulnerable communities.
The JMM-led alliance retained power after the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly election, with Hemant Soren continuing as Chief Minister. The party remains one of the central political forces in Jharkhand.
