History & Achievements

History
Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state and has played a major role in the country's political and parliamentary history. Lucknow serves as the state capital, while the state has traditionally been one of India's most politically significant regions. The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was first constituted on 8 March 1952. The state has a bicameral legislature, consisting of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The Legislative Assembly has 403 elected members, while the Legislative Council has 100 members. Major political parties that have shaped Uttar Pradesh politics include the Indian National Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Regional parties and alliances have also played important roles in different periods. The state experienced Congress dominance in its early decades after Independence. From the late 1980s onward, regional and social-justice politics became increasingly important, with the rise of the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. The BJP became a major political force in the state and formed the government in 2017 under Yogi Adityanath. The BJP returned to power in the 2022 Assembly election, with Yogi Adityanath continuing as Chief Minister. The current Seventeenth Legislative Assembly was constituted in March 2022. The present Assembly is led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while Mata Prasad Pandey serves as Leader of the Opposition. Uttar Pradesh has also been central to national politics because of its large representation in the Lok Sabha. Political developments in the state frequently influence national elections, coalition politics and the wider political landscape of India.
