History & Achievements
History
Uttarakhand was created after a long statehood movement driven by demands for separate administrative identity, balanced development and greater political representation for the hill regions. The State was established as Uttaranchal on 9 November 2000 during the tenure of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The name was changed to Uttarakhand in 2007 following the aspirations associated with the statehood movement. The Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly is a 70-member unicameral legislature. Since its formation, the State has primarily witnessed political competition between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). The BJP and Congress have alternated in forming governments, with issues such as hill development, migration, employment, tourism, infrastructure, agriculture, disaster management and environmental protection remaining important political themes. Pushkar Singh Dhami became Chief Minister in July 2021 and continued for a second term from March 2022. The BJP won a majority in the 2022 Assembly election, returning to power for a second consecutive term — an important development in the State's electoral history. The current Assembly has 70 members, including BJP, Congress, BSP and independent representatives. Uttarakhand's political identity is also strongly connected with the Char Dham pilgrimage, environmental conservation, the Himalayan ecosystem, military service, rural development and concerns about migration from mountain villages.
