History & Achievements
History
Delhi has played a central role in India's political and administrative history as the national capital. The Delhi Legislative Assembly was established under the Government of India Act, 1919 and later abolished in 1956 when Delhi became a Union Territory. A Metropolitan Council was introduced in 1966 as an advisory body. The present Legislative Assembly was restored after the 69th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1991. The first elections to the re-established Delhi Legislative Assembly were held in 1993. The Delhi Legislative Assembly has 70 seats. The political history of Delhi since 1993 has included governments led by different political parties, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) being prominent participants in Delhi's electoral politics. Delhi's government has legislative and executive responsibilities over subjects assigned to the National Capital Territory, while public order, police, and land remain outside the legislative competence of the Delhi Assembly under the constitutional framework.
Achievements
Delhi has developed as India's principal political and administrative centre and hosts Parliament, the Supreme Court, central government ministries, and numerous national institutions. Major areas of development include expansion of road and public transport infrastructure, growth of the Delhi Metro network, improvements in urban connectivity, development of public education and healthcare facilities, expansion of civic infrastructure, and implementation of various social welfare programmes. Delhi has also developed into an important centre for business, education, culture, tourism, diplomatic activity, and national-level political institutions.
