Andhra Pradesh Municipal Elections: 13 Corporations and 70 Municipalities to Go to Polls Tomorrow; TDP Alliance and YSRCP Face Crucial Test

The polling will cover 13 municipal corporations and 70 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats across the state. With campaigning officially coming to an end, political parties are now looking towards voters to determine their strength at the grassroots level.
How Many Municipal Corporations and Municipalities Are Going to Elections?
According to the election arrangements, polling will take place in 13 municipal corporations and 70 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats.
Initially, the election schedule covered 100 urban local bodies, consisting of 13 municipal corporations, 77 municipalities and 10 Nagar Panchayats. However, 17 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats were settled through unanimous victories, leaving 70 urban local bodies in this category to face polling.
The 13 municipal corporations include Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Vizianagaram, Eluru, Machilipatnam, Guntur, Ongole, Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantapur.
More than 3,200 municipal divisions and wards will witness voting in the contested areas. Polling is scheduled to take place from 7 AM to 5 PM.
TDP-Led NDA Alliance Hopes to Strengthen Its Political Position
The ruling alliance comprising the Telugu Desam Party, Jana Sena Party and Bharatiya Janata Party is entering the elections with expectations of extending its political influence across urban Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan are looking to translate the alliance's Assembly election support into victories at the municipal level.
The TDP is expected to highlight the government's development initiatives, welfare programmes, infrastructure projects and commitments to urban development.
Jana Sena and BJP are also expected to benefit from their partnership with the TDP, although the ability of the three parties to transfer votes effectively will be an important factor.
The alliance is particularly interested in securing important municipal corporations, where control of civic administration could strengthen its political position.
YSRCP Looks to Challenge the Ruling Alliance
For the opposition YSR Congress Party led by former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, these elections represent an opportunity to demonstrate that the party continues to enjoy substantial public support.
The YSRCP is attempting to regain political ground by concentrating on local-level issues, welfare programmes and dissatisfaction among sections of the public.
The party is expected to question the ruling government's performance, particularly regarding promises made during the Assembly elections, employment opportunities, farmers' concerns and the implementation of welfare schemes.
YSRCP leaders are also hoping to retain their influence in areas where the party maintained a strong organisational presence during its previous tenure.
A strong performance could improve the morale of its cadre and strengthen its position as the principal opposition party in the state.
What Happened in the Unanimous Elections?
One of the notable developments before polling has been the number of unanimous victories secured by candidates belonging to the ruling alliance.
Out of 87 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats, 17 urban local bodies have been settled without a contest.
Among the 17 unanimous chairperson victories, the TDP secured 15, while Jana Sena and BJP secured one each.
Election Security and Counting Arrangements
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has made extensive arrangements to conduct peaceful polling.
Around 36,351 police personnel are being deployed across the state. More than 12,500 polling stations have been established, with approximately 38,000 to 40,000 personnel assigned election duties.
Authorities are also using CCTV cameras, drones and videography in sensitive areas to monitor the polling process.
The counting of votes is scheduled for November 3, when the political parties will learn whether their campaign strategies have translated into electoral victories.
Conclusion: A Crucial Political Test for Andhra Pradesh
The November 1 municipal elections are more than a contest for mayors and municipal chairpersons. They represent an important opportunity for the ruling NDA alliance to demonstrate its continued political influence and for the YSRCP to establish its strength as the principal opposition.
For Chandrababu Naidu, a strong performance would reinforce the ruling alliance's grassroots position. For Jagan Mohan Reddy, a significant victory would provide fresh momentum to the opposition.
With 13 municipal corporations and 70 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats going to polling, the results will offer an important picture of Andhra Pradesh's urban political landscape.
The real question now is whether the ruling alliance can consolidate its advantage or whether the YSRCP can deliver a strong comeback. The voters will provide the answer on November 3.
