Andhra Pradesh Local Body Elections: ZPTC, MPTC Polling Schedule Under Focus Amid Uncertainty.

The local body election process in Andhra Pradesh has entered a crucial phase, with uncertainty surrounding the November 3 polling date for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections. The issue has drawn attention as the counting of votes for urban local body elections is also scheduled for November 3, raising questions about whether the rural local body polling schedule will remain unchanged.
According to the revised schedule, polling for urban local bodies across the state will be held on November 1, while the counting of votes and declaration of results are scheduled for November 3. The urban polls were initially scheduled for October 28 but were postponed following directions from the Supreme Court concerning the publication of the final list of contesting candidates and complaints relating to the nomination process.
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) has rescheduled the urban local body polls after reviewing reports and representations concerning alleged obstruction of candidates during the filing of nominations. The commission also extended the nomination process in selected urban local bodies to provide eligible candidates an opportunity to contest. According to reports, repolling, if required, is scheduled for November 2, with counting on November 3.
ZPTC, MPTC Elections Scheduled for November 3
Meanwhile, the SEC has announced November 3 as the polling date for MPTC and ZPTC elections, with counting of votes scheduled for November 5. These elections form a major part of the state's rural local governance process and will determine representatives at the mandal and district levels.
According to reports published on October 20, elections are scheduled for 659 ZPTC seats across 28 Zilla Parishads and 9,829 MPTC seats across 659 mandals. Polling has been withheld in four ZPTC seats and 29 MPTC seats. The elections cover a substantial electorate, with approximately 2.81 crore voters eligible to participate.
Will the Rural Polling Date Be Changed?
The overlap between urban vote counting on November 3 and rural local body polling on the same day has raised questions about the election arrangements. However, the two processes involve different categories of local bodies, and the overlap alone does not confirm that the rural polling date will be postponed.
As of the latest reports reviewed, November 3 remains the announced polling date for MPTC and ZPTC elections, while November 5 remains the scheduled counting date. Any change to these dates would require an official announcement from the competent election authorities.
Election Preparations and Security Arrangements
The SEC and district-level authorities are also focusing on maintaining law and order throughout the election process. Reports of alleged intimidation, clashes and disruptions during the nomination process have prompted scrutiny by election officials and police authorities.
The Supreme Court's intervention in the urban local body election process has added another layer of attention to the preparations. Election officials are expected to ensure that candidates receive a fair opportunity to contest and that voting takes place peacefully.
Gram Panchayat Elections to Follow in Phases
The local body election programme also includes Gram Panchayat elections, which are scheduled to be conducted in three phases. According to the previously announced timetable, polling is planned for November 26, November 29 and December 2, 2026. Results are expected to be declared on the respective polling days, subject to any subsequent revisions announced by the SEC.
With urban local body polling scheduled for November 1, vote counting on November 3, and MPTC and ZPTC polling also scheduled for November 3, the coming days will be important for the state's election administration. Voters, candidates and political parties will be watching for any official clarification regarding the timetable.
For now, the key dates remain November 1 for urban local body polling, November 3 for urban vote counting and MPTC-ZPTC polling, and November 5 for MPTC-ZPTC vote counting. Any change to this schedule should be treated as unconfirmed until formally announced by the State Election Commission.
