Koppal Bandh: ₹54,000-Crore Baldota Steel Project Faces Public Opposition; Police Tighten Security as KSRTC Services Disrupted

The protest has developed into a wider public movement over industrial pollution, environmental protection, public health and the future of the Tungabhadra region. The Koppal District Bachao Andolana Samiti and the Environment Protection Forum's joint action committee called for the shutdown of Koppal and Bhagyanagar, appealing to traders, transport operators, educational institutions and the general public to participate.
What Is the ₹54,000-Crore Baldota Investment Project?
The Baldota Group has proposed an investment of approximately ₹54,000 crore to establish a large-scale steel and power industrial project in the Basapur area of Koppal district.
The project is expected to bring significant industrial investment and create employment opportunities through manufacturing and related activities.
However, the proposed development has generated opposition among local residents, who are concerned about its potential environmental and social consequences.
The central disagreement is not simply about industrial investment. It concerns whether such a large industrial project can operate without affecting the health, water resources, agriculture and living conditions of nearby communities.
Why Are People of Koppal Opposing the Baldota Project?
Residents and environmental activists have raised several concerns about the proposed industrial development.
1. Air pollution and public health
People living around existing industrial areas have complained about dust, smoke and deteriorating air quality. Residents fear that another major steel project could increase pollution and expose nearby villages to additional health risks.
They argue that an independent health assessment should be conducted before allowing further industrial expansion.
2. Threat to Tungabhadra water resources
The Tungabhadra River is an important water source for agriculture, drinking water and other daily requirements in the region.
Protesters fear that industrial activity could increase pressure on local water resources and potentially affect water quality. They are demanding stronger safeguards to protect the river and surrounding water bodies.
3. Basapur Lake controversy
Another major issue concerns Basapur Lake, which local protesters say should remain accessible to the public.
Activists have alleged that industrial development and restrictions around the factory premises have affected public access to the lake. They are demanding restoration of public access and protection of the water body.
4. Impact on agriculture and surrounding villages
Farmers fear that industrial pollution could affect agricultural land, crops, livestock and groundwater.
The protest committee has highlighted 22 villages that it considers affected by industrial activity and is demanding an independent assessment of the environmental and health conditions in these areas.
One Year of Continuous Protest
The movement against the Baldota project began on October 31, 2025.
Since then, members of the Koppal District Bachao Andolana Samiti and environmental organisations have continued their agitation, including a prolonged sit-in protest near the Koppal municipal office.
The movement has received support from farmers' organisations, religious leaders, writers, environmental activists and local residents.
On October 29, 2026, Koppal MP K. Rajasekhar Hitnal visited the protest site during the 362nd day of the agitation and expressed support for the demands.
He stated that he would make efforts to discuss the matter with the Chief Minister and other concerned representatives.
The anniversary of the movement has now become the occasion for the statewide attention-seeking bandh in Koppal.
Traffic was also affected on the Koppal–Hosapete National Highway during that protest.
For the October 31 bandh, organisers planned a procession from Gavisiddeshwara Mutt towards the municipal office, followed by a public meeting.
The administration's responsibility is to maintain public order while allowing peaceful demonstrations. Specific arrests or detentions during today's bandh should be confirmed through an official police statement before being reported as facts.
KSRTC Bus Services Affected During Today's Bandh
Public transportation has also become an important concern during the Koppal bandh.
KSRTC bus operations are a major means of transportation for residents travelling between Koppal, surrounding villages and other cities.
Conclusion: Koppal's Development Debate Goes Beyond One Industrial Project
The October 31 bandh has brought the conflict between industrial investment and environmental concerns in Koppal back into public focus.
The proposed ₹54,000-crore Baldota investment has become the centre of a year-long movement involving residents, farmers, environmental activists and local organisations.
While large industrial investments can contribute to employment and economic development, residents are demanding assurances that their health, water resources, agricultural activities and environment will not be compromised.
