History & Achievements

History
Chandigarh has a distinctive political and administrative position in India. Before 1966, the area formed part of Punjab and its residents were represented in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Following the reorganisation of Punjab on 1 November 1966, Chandigarh became a separate Union Territory administered directly by the Central Government. Chandigarh does not have its own Legislative Assembly or Chief Minister. Its administration is headed by an Administrator, with the Parliament of India exercising legislative powers for the Union Territory. Chandigarh has one Lok Sabha constituency and one district. The city has a Municipal Corporation, established in 1994, which manages important local civic functions. An elected Mayor heads the Municipal Corporation, while the Chandigarh Administration handles UT-level administration and development. Chandigarh is politically significant because it serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, while remaining a separate Union Territory. This makes it an important administrative, political and institutional centre of northern India. The city was conceived as a modern, planned urban centre and became internationally recognised for its architecture and urban planning. The master plan was developed by Le Corbusier, with contributions from architects including Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew.
