About the Assam Legislative Assembly
Assam Legislative Assembly
The Assam Legislative Assembly, also known as the Assam Vidhan Sabha, is the unicameral legislative body of the Indian state of Assam. It is located in Dispur, Guwahati, and plays an important role in the state's democratic, political and administrative system.
The Assembly consists of 126 elected members representing constituencies across Assam. The current 16th Assam Legislative Assembly was constituted following the 2026 Assembly elections, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive majority.
Government and leadership
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma serves as the Chief Minister of Assam, leading the BJP-led NDA government. He took oath for a second consecutive term on May 12, 2026.
Ranjeet Kumar Dass is the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He presides over House proceedings, maintains parliamentary discipline and oversees legislative business.
Wazed Ali Choudhury of the Indian National Congress serves as the Leader of the Opposition. He was officially recognised for the position by the Assembly Speaker in June 2026. The Congress is the principal opposition party in the Assembly.
Electoral composition
In the 2026 Assembly elections, the NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF), secured 10 seats each.
The Congress won 19 seats and emerged as the principal opposition party. Other regional and political parties also secured representation in the Assembly.
Legislative responsibilities
The Assam Legislative Assembly is responsible for debating and passing state laws, approving the annual budget and examining government policies. Its work covers agriculture, education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, tourism, flood management, rural development and the welfare of indigenous communities.
Elected representatives raise constituency-level concerns, participate in debates and hold the government accountable through legislative procedures.
Political significance
Assam is an important political and strategic state in Northeast India. Its Assembly plays a major role in shaping policies concerning regional development, cultural identity, border security, migration, connectivity and economic growth.
The 2026 election strengthened the BJP-led NDA's position in the state, allowing the alliance to form the government for a third consecutive term.
Term and next election
The current 16th Assam Legislative Assembly has a regular five-year term covering 2026–2031. The next regular Assam Legislative Assembly election is expected in 2031, subject to constitutional and electoral developments.
