About the Delhi Legislative Assembly
Delhi Legislative Assembly
The Delhi Legislative Assembly, also known as the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, is the legislative body of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. It is located at the Old Secretariat in Civil Lines, Delhi.
The Assembly consists of 70 elected members representing constituencies across the National Capital Territory. The current Eighth Legislative Assembly was constituted following the February 2025 elections, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 48 seats and formed the government.
Government and leadership
Rekha Gupta serves as the Chief Minister of Delhi, leading the BJP government. Vijender Gupta is the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and presides over House proceedings.
Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) serves as the Leader of the Opposition. The opposition scrutinises government decisions, raises public concerns and participates in legislative debates.
Legislative responsibilities
The Assembly debates and passes laws on matters within its constitutional jurisdiction, approves the Delhi government's budget and examines public policies. Its work includes education, healthcare, transport, water supply, electricity, public services and urban development.
Delhi has a special administrative structure in which certain subjects, including public order, police and land, remain outside the elected government's legislative control.
Political significance
As India's National Capital Territory, Delhi has a distinctive political and administrative position. Its Legislative Assembly plays an important role in local governance, public welfare and the democratic representation of Delhi's residents.
Term and next election
The current Eighth Delhi Legislative Assembly began in February 2025 and has a normal five-year term. The next regular Delhi Legislative Assembly election is expected in 2030, subject to constitutional and electoral developments.
