Haryana Legislative Assembly
The Haryana Legislative Assembly, also known as the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, is the unicameral legislature of the state of Haryana. It is located in Chandigarh, the shared capital of Haryana and Punjab. The Assembly plays an important role in making state laws, approving public expenditure and overseeing the functioning of the state government.
The Assembly consists of 90 elected members representing constituencies across Haryana. The current 15th Haryana Legislative Assembly was constituted following the October 2024 Assembly elections, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority and formed the government.

Nayab Singh Saini serves as the Chief Minister of Haryana, leading the Bharatiya Janata Party government.
Harvinder Kalyan serves as the Speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly. He presides over House proceedings, maintains order during debates and oversees legislative business.
Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Indian National Congress (INC) serves as the Leader of the Opposition. The Congress is the principal opposition party in the Assembly, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) also has representation.
Legislative responsibilities
The Haryana Legislative Assembly is responsible for debating and passing state laws, approving the annual budget and examining government policies. Its members raise public concerns and discuss matters relating to agriculture, education, healthcare, employment, industry, infrastructure, transport, irrigation and rural development.
The Assembly also holds the government accountable through question hours, debates, motions and committee proceedings.
Political significance
Haryana is an important agricultural, industrial and economic state in northern India. Its proximity to Delhi and the National Capital Region makes it an important centre for manufacturing, information technology, logistics, education and business.
The Legislative Assembly plays a significant role in shaping the state's agricultural policies, industrial development, infrastructure, employment initiatives and public welfare programmes. It provides a democratic platform for elected representatives from different constituencies to debate policies and raise citizens' concerns.
Term and next election
The current 15th Haryana Legislative Assembly was elected in October 2024 and has a regular five-year term covering 2024–2029. The next regular Haryana Legislative Assembly election is expected in 2029, subject to constitutional and electoral developments.
