About the Kerala Legislative Assembly
Kerala Legislative Assembly
The Kerala Legislative Assembly, also known as the Kerala Niyamasabha or Kerala Vidhan Sabha, is the unicameral legislative body of the Indian state of Kerala. It is located in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, and plays a central role in the state's democratic and parliamentary system.
The Assembly consists of 140 elected members representing constituencies across Kerala. The current 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly was constituted following the 2026 Assembly elections, which brought a change in the state's political leadership.
Government and leadership
V. D. Satheesan serves as the Chief Minister of Kerala, leading the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government. The UDF secured a majority in the 2026 Assembly elections and formed the government.
Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan serves as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He presides over House proceedings, maintains parliamentary discipline and ensures that legislative business is conducted according to established rules.
Pinarayi Vijayan, former Chief Minister and senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, serves as the Leader of the Opposition. The Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), is the principal opposition alliance in the Assembly.
Legislative responsibilities
The Kerala Legislative Assembly is responsible for debating and passing state laws, approving the annual budget and examining government policies. Members raise public concerns and discuss important matters relating to education, healthcare, agriculture, employment, tourism, infrastructure, social welfare and environmental protection.
The Assembly also holds the government accountable through questions, debates, motions and committee proceedings.
Political significance
Kerala has a strong tradition of parliamentary democracy and competitive politics, with the UDF and LDF serving as the state's two principal political alliances. The 2026 Assembly election marked a significant political transition, bringing the UDF back to power after the previous LDF government.
The Legislative Assembly remains an important institution for shaping Kerala's development priorities, public policies and political direction.
Term and next election
The current 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly has a regular five-year term covering 2026–2031. The next regular Kerala Legislative Assembly election is expected in 2031, subject to constitutional and electoral developments.
