Akhilesh Yadav Demands Aadhaar-Linked Voter Lists, Raises Questions Over UP Electoral Roll Revision

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has called for linking electoral rolls with Aadhaar cards and introducing mandatory biometric verification at polling booths across Uttar Pradesh. The demand has intensified the political debate over voter identification, electoral transparency and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference at the Samajwadi Party headquarters in Lucknow on October 26, 2026, Yadav alleged that irregularities in voter lists needed stronger scrutiny. He argued that the Election Commission of India must ensure that eligible voters are not excluded, incorrect entries are removed and duplicate registrations are identified.
The SP chief also accused the BJP of attempting to influence electoral processes through what he described as vote fixing. These allegations reflect the growing political disagreement between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the preparation and verification of electoral rolls.
Akhilesh Yadav Calls for Aadhaar and Biometric Verification
Yadav proposed linking electoral rolls with Aadhaar cards and making biometric verification facilities mandatory at every polling booth.
According to the SP leader, these measures could help identify duplicate entries and improve the verification of voter identities. He maintained that the Election Commission has a responsibility to protect every eligible citizen's right to vote.
The proposal has placed voter identification and electoral safeguards at the centre of the political discussion in Uttar Pradesh.
However, Aadhaar linkage and biometric verification would require appropriate legal, administrative and technical arrangements. Any implementation would need to comply with applicable election laws, privacy protections and procedures for ensuring that eligible voters are not wrongly denied their voting rights.
Election Commission Orders Statewide Re-Verification
The controversy comes after the Election Commission ordered a statewide re-verification of names added, deleted or amended in Uttar Pradesh's electoral rolls through Forms 6, 7 and 8 after the Special Intensive Revision process concluded on April 10, 2026.
According to reports, the action followed complaints about alleged discrepancies in voter lists, including concerns raised in districts such as Pilibhit and Azamgarh.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa directed officials to strengthen the verification process. The instructions included preventing computer assistants from entering further electoral-roll data and requiring booth-level officers to digitise physical forms through the designated BLO application.
The Election Commission also directed divisional commissioners to supervise electoral-roll verification across all 403 Assembly constituencies.
Officials were instructed to examine possible anomalies, identify duplicate entries and help ensure the accuracy of the electoral rolls ahead of the next revision process.
BJP and Opposition Clash Over Electoral Transparency
The voter-list controversy has become another point of confrontation between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party.
Yadav has questioned the handling of electoral-roll revision and called for additional safeguards to protect voters. The SP has said it will continue examining voter lists and reporting suspected discrepancies to the Election Commission.
The BJP and the Election Commission's position should be assessed through their official statements and the findings of the verification process. Allegations of deliberate electoral manipulation must be distinguished from discrepancies that are established through official investigations.
The central issue remains whether electoral rolls accurately reflect eligible voters and whether any errors are corrected through transparent procedures.
Why the Issue Matters Ahead of the 2027 UP Elections
Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies, making electoral-roll accuracy a significant administrative and political concern ahead of the 2027 state elections.
For the Samajwadi Party, scrutiny of voter lists has become part of its broader political campaign against the BJP government. The BJP, meanwhile, will face continued scrutiny over election administration and the implementation of procedures intended to protect electoral integrity.
Conclusion
Akhilesh Yadav's demand for Aadhaar-linked voter lists and biometric verification has intensified the debate over electoral transparency in Uttar Pradesh. His proposals come as the Election Commission undertakes a statewide re-verification of electoral-roll changes following complaints about alleged irregularities.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the accuracy of voter lists and the protection of eligible voters are likely to remain important political and administrative issues. The outcome of the verification exercise and any official findings will be crucial in determining the extent of the reported discrepancies.
