Punjab Paddy Procurement Hit by Heavy Rain; Red Alert in 7 Districts

Heavy rainfall across Punjab on October 11, 2026, disrupted the ongoing paddy procurement season, flooding parts of grain markets and raising concerns about crop quality, procurement delays and potential losses for farmers.
Fazilka Mandi Faces Waterlogging
Parts of the Fazilka grain market were inundated following heavy rain, with water reportedly accumulating to around three feet in some areas. Harvested paddy sacks were submerged, while produce lying in the open was drenched.
Other affected grain markets included Khanna, Batala and Wadala Granthi, where rainfall disrupted normal procurement activities.
Farmers Fear Harvesting Delays
Farmers expressed concern that the adverse weather could delay the harvesting of standing paddy crops by at least a week in affected areas. Continued rainfall and waterlogging could also create difficulties in transporting produce to mandis and maintaining grain quality.
The disruption comes during Punjab's paddy procurement season, when farmers depend on timely harvesting, transportation and procurement arrangements to sell their produce.
IMD Issues Weather Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, warned of adverse weather conditions in several districts on October 11. The report also highlighted a red alert covering seven districts.
The weather conditions increased concerns about further disruption to harvesting and procurement operations. However, the names of all seven districts should be confirmed from the relevant IMD bulletin before publication.
Challenges for Punjab's Agricultural Sector
Heavy rainfall during the procurement season can expose harvested grain to moisture and waterlogging, potentially affecting quality and increasing handling and storage difficulties. Farmers, mandi authorities and procurement agencies may need to coordinate drainage, grain protection and transportation arrangements to minimise losses.
The extent of the damage and the overall impact on procurement operations will depend on subsequent weather conditions and the speed at which affected markets can resume normal activities.
