History
Foundation and Historic Rise (1982–1983) The Telugu Desam Party was founded on 29 March 1982 in Hyderabad by iconic Telugu film actor and cultural icon N. T. Rama Rao (NTR). Formed on the platform of restoring Telugu self-respect, the party created political history within just nine months of its inception by sweeping the 1983 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, defeating the decades-long rule of the Indian National Congress. NTR took oath as the 10th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
National Impact and Official Opposition (1984) In the 1984 General Election, held shortly after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the TDP won 30 Lok Sabha seats, emerging as the second-largest party in Parliament and becoming the first regional party in Indian history to serve as the primary Official Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Modernization Era under N. Chandrababu Naidu (1995–2004) In 1995, N. Chandrababu Naidu assumed the leadership of the party and the office of Chief Minister. Under his governance, Andhra Pradesh underwent massive economic and digital transformations, positioning Hyderabad as a global IT and biotechnology hub (Cyberabad). TDP also played a pivotal kingmaker role in national politics, supporting the United Front and later serving as a crucial pillar of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with TDP leader G. M. C. Balayogi serving as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Bifurcation and Rebuilding Andhra Pradesh (2014–2019) Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the TDP swept the assembly elections in residual Andhra Pradesh in alliance with the BJP. N. Chandrababu Naidu served as Chief Minister, focusing on state-rebuilding, industrial investments, and the development of the planned greenfield capital city at Amaravati.
Resurgence and Sweeping Victory (2024–Present) After serving as the principal opposition from 2019 to 2024, the TDP, in alliance with the Jana Sena Party and BJP, achieved a landslide victory in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, winning 135 out of 144 contested seats. N. Chandrababu Naidu was sworn in as Chief Minister for a historic fourth term. The party also won 16 Lok Sabha seats, establishing itself as a key foundational pillar in the central Union Government.
