The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has retained both Assembly seats in the West Bengal bypolls held on 6th October, with results declared on 9th October.
According to official data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), BJP registered decisive victories in both constituencies.
In Nandigram, Purba Medinipur district, BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath secured 1,64,427 votes and won by a record margin of 1,22,753 votes against Congress nominee Milan Pradhan who got 41,674 votes.
In Rejinagar, Murshidabad district, BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar secured 1,29,914 votes and won by a margin of 75,816 votes. He defeated Aam Janata Unnayan Party's candidate by a significant margin.
With these two wins, the BJP's strength in the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly has now reached 209 MLAs.
Why were bypolls held?
The Rejinagar seat fell vacant following the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir, while the Nandigram seat fell vacant after Suvendu Adhikari chose to retain another seat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters for the mandate, saying it will give added strength to work for public welfare.
