A New Era for the National Conference

In a significant political development, Omar Abdullah, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has been unanimously elected as the leader of the National Conference (NC) legislature party. This decision marks a pivotal moment as Abdullah prepares to step back into a prominent leadership role.

Abdullah stated, “We will then proceed to the Raj Bhavan to stake our claim for government formation. We will also request the lieutenant governor to schedule a time for the swearing-in”.

A Resounding Victory

This leadership announcement follows a resounding victory for the National Conference and Congress alliance in the recent assembly elections. Out of 90 total seats in the Union Territory, the NC contested 51.

They allocated 32 seats to their ally, Congress, while giving one seat each to the CPI(M) and the Panthers Party. The two main parties even engaged in a ‘friendly’ contest for five seats.

NC Emerges as the Largest Party

The National Conference emerged as the single-largest party, winning 42 seats. This includes two seats secured by Omar Abdullah himself. The BJP followed in second place, winning 29 seats, according to results announced on October 8.

With Congress securing six seats and CPI(M) winning its sole seat, the alliance achieved a total of 49 seats. This comfortably surpasses the majority mark of 46 in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

Historical Context

Abdullah’s return to the chief minister ship is noteworthy. He previously served in this role from 2009 to 2015.

Vote counting for the assembly elections began on the morning of October 9. This marks a historic moment, as it represents the first elected government in the union territory since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
