Independent MLA’s extended their support to NC’s Omar Abdullah

National Conference Moves Forward: Omar Abdullah Nominated as Legislative Party Leader

Significant Meeting in Srinagar

On Thursday, the National Conference (NC) held an important party legislature meeting at their headquarters, Nawai Subh, in Srinagar. During this session, the party nominated vice-president Omar Abdullah as the leader of the legislative party. This decision marks a crucial step in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape.

Acknowledgment and Future Plans

Omar Abdullah thanked the 42 elected representatives who attended, including party president Farooq Abdullah. He said, “I have been elected as the leader of the Legislature Party, and I thank the MLAs for their support”.

He also mentioned ongoing discussions to secure a letter of support from the Congress. As he prepares to become the next chief minister of J&K, he revealed that four independent MLAs have pledged their support to the NC. This support raises the total number of NC MLAs to 46 in the 90-member assembly.

He added, “Once we receive the letter from Congress, we will approach the Raj Bhavan to claim the mandate to form the government“. This statement shows a clear path forward for the party.

The Congress Alliance

The Congress formed a pre-poll alliance with the NC, but they secured only six seats across J&K—five in Kashmir and one in the Jammu division. Tariq Karra, the newly-appointed J&K chief of Congress, won from the central Shalteng constituency. He later met with NC leadership at Abdullah‘s residence.

On Thursday, Karra traveled to New Delhi to discuss the party’s performance in J&K with Congress leaders. He stated, “Our legislative party meeting is scheduled for Friday in Srinagar”. After that, they will meet formally with their alliance partners. However, no formal discussions have taken place about sharing ministerial positions or government formation between the two parties.

Addressing Key Issues

Farooq Abdullah highlighted the party’s commitment to tackling the pressing issues faced by the people of J&K. He hopes the central government will engage positively with the new administration. “J&K is the crown of the nation, and when the crown shines, the entire country shines,” he asserted.

Additionally, Abdullah acknowledged that restoring Article 370 may take time, but he stressed that their immediate focus is on restoring statehood. “We will consult with Congress to determine the appropriate timing for taking the oath,” he noted. He also highlighted J&K’s strategic importance, sharing borders with atomic powers like Pakistan and China, urging the central government to recognize this reality.
