Congress’ Challenge in Haryana: A Call for Accountability
Resignation for Moral Responsibility
In a significant move, Congress‘ Haryana in-charge Deepak Babaria announced his resignation on Monday. He is taking moral responsibility for the party’s disappointing performance in the recent Assembly elections. This decision follows a series of internal meetings aimed at evaluating the electoral fallout and understanding the reasons for their defeat.

Babaria’s Commitment
Babaria stated, “Last week, following the election results, I offered to resign. I communicated to the high command that they could replace me if they deemed it necessary.” He expressed that his health isn’t great and that he feels a moral obligation given the outcome. He also mentioned that he had previously offered to resign as the in-charge of Delhi after the Lok Sabha polls.
Internal Review and Investigations
Last Thursday, Congress leadership conducted a crucial review meeting to analyze the unexpected results in the Haryana Assembly elections. During this meeting, they decided to form a fact-finding team. This team will interview candidates to uncover the reasons behind the loss. Sources indicate that discussions centered on the unexpected results and complaints regarding discrepancies in electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Key Leadership Involvement
The meeting included key figures such as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC general secretary for organization KC Venugopal. Senior observers Ashok Gehlot and Ajay Maken were also present. Babaria joined the discussion online, contributing his insights.
Demands for EVM Investigation
In light of the EVM complaints, Congress has called for a thorough investigation. They are urging that the contested machines be sealed and secured until the inquiry is complete. A delegation of senior leaders, including former chief ministers Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Ashok Gehlot, met with Election Commission officials to discuss these issues further.
Allegations of EVM Discrepancies
Congress leaders reported at least 20 complaints regarding the EVMs. Some machines were allegedly operating at an unusually high battery capacity of 99 percent. In contrast, the average EVM functioned at only 60 to 70 percent during counting. The party had been optimistic about unseating the BJP, which has held power for a decade.

Looking Ahead
However, the BJP secured 48 seats, effectively halting Congress’s comeback attempt. This result contradicted several exit polls that had predicted a comfortable win for Congress. Ultimately, the party managed to win 37 seats in the 90-member assembly.
This outcome highlights the need for introspection and strategic reassessment. As Congress navigates these challenges, a focus on accountability and thorough investigation will be crucial. Rebuilding trust and support among constituents will be essential for future electoral success.
