Bihar MLC Election Results 2026: RJD Makes a Strong Comeback, BJP Faces Setbacks as Jan Suraaj Enters Legislative Council

The Bihar Legislative Council elections of October 2026 have produced a significant political contest, bringing fresh attention to the changing balance of power among the state's major political parties. The results from eight graduates' and teachers' constituencies have delivered important victories for the BJP, RJD, JD(U), Jan Suraaj Party and independent candidates.
One of the biggest developments has been the RJD's success in constituencies previously represented by established political figures. The party's performance has strengthened its position in the Legislative Council and provided fresh momentum to its political organisation.
The election has also marked an important milestone for Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party, which secured its first representation in the Bihar Legislative Council.
RJD's victories change the political narrative
The RJD secured a notable victory in the Patna Teachers' constituency, where Dr Sanjeev Kumar defeated five-time BJP MLC Nawal Kishore Yadav.
Another important result came from the Darbhanga Graduates' constituency. On October 30, the Election Commission formally declared RJD candidate Anil Jha elected after a prolonged counting process.
Anil Jha secured 25,406 votes, defeating BJP candidate Sarvesh Kumar, who received 21,396 votes. These victories represent an important gain for the RJD, particularly because the party had not previously held these seats in the same election cycle.
Jan Suraaj makes its mark
The election also brought an important breakthrough for Jan Suraaj.
Its candidate Suresh Prasad Rai won the Darbhanga Teachers' constituency, defeating former Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha by 324 votes.
The victory marks the party's entry into the Bihar Legislative Council and gives it an opportunity to establish a presence in the state's legislative politics.
For Prashant Kishor, the result offers an important political milestone as his organisation continues building its electoral presence.
BJP and JD(U) face a new political challenge
The results have also highlighted the challenges facing established parties.
The BJP retained important constituencies but lost prominent contests, including Patna Teachers' and Darbhanga Graduates'.
JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar retained the Patna Graduates' constituency, providing a significant victory for the NDA partner.
Independent candidates also demonstrated their influence, showing that local political networks and candidate credibility remain important factors in Bihar's electoral landscape.
Congress also faces an organisational challenge
The Congress suffered a setback in the Darbhanga Teachers' constituency, where its senior leader Madan Mohan Jha lost to Jan Suraaj candidate Suresh Prasad Rai.
This result raises questions about the party's ability to retain influence in constituencies where it has historically maintained political connections.
For Congress, the task is not simply to criticise the BJP or strengthen opposition alliances. It must also rebuild its grassroots network and establish a stronger relationship with specific voter groups.
Why these results matter
The Bihar MLC results are important because they reflect political competition beyond ordinary Assembly elections.
Teachers' and graduates' constituencies involve a relatively specialised electorate, making their results an indicator of political organisation, candidate connections and local influence.
For the RJD, the victories provide encouragement. For the BJP, the setbacks highlight the need to strengthen its organisation among professional and educated voter groups.
Jan Suraaj's entry adds another dimension to Bihar's political competition.
What happens next?
The newly elected representatives will be expected to raise constituency-specific concerns in the Legislative Council.
Teachers' representatives will face expectations regarding education policy, employment conditions and institutional development. Graduates' representatives will be expected to address issues involving employment, professional opportunities and access to public services.
For political parties, the results provide an opportunity to review their organisational performance.
The BJP and JD(U) will seek to consolidate their support, the RJD will attempt to build on its victories, and Jan Suraaj will face the challenge of proving that its first legislative breakthrough can translate into sustained political influence.
The bigger political message: Bihar's political competition is evolving, and no established party can assume that its traditional support base will remain unchanged.
