UP MLC Results 2026: Samajwadi Party Wins Five Seats, BJP Secures Six

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election results have given both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) victories across teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies. According to an Economic Times report published on October 29, 2026, the BJP secured six of the 11 seats, while the SP won five.
The results are politically significant because Uttar Pradesh is due to hold Assembly elections in 2027. However, the MLC elections involve specific electorates of eligible teachers and registered graduates, so their results should not be treated as a direct measure of voting preferences across the entire state.
Samajwadi Party Wins in Varanasi and Agra-Aligarh
The Samajwadi Party registered victories in several constituencies, including Varanasi Teachers’ and Agra-Aligarh Teachers’. It also won the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’ constituency.
Lal Bihari Yadav won the Varanasi Teachers’ seat for the SP. The party’s Akash Agrawal defeated BJP candidate Hari Kishore Tiwari in the Agra-Aligarh Teachers’ constituency, according to the report.
Kanti Singh also defeated BJP candidate Avnish Kumar Singh in the Lucknow Graduates’ constituency. These victories added to the SP’s representation in the Legislative Council and provided the party with results to highlight as it prepares for the next Assembly election.
BJP Retains Six Seats
The BJP secured six seats, including Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’, Lucknow Teachers’, Meerut Teachers’ and Meerut Graduates’. It also won the Agra Graduates’ and Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituencies.
Hari Singh Dhillon retained the Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’ seat. Dinesh Kumar Goyal won the Meerut Teachers’ constituency, while Chand Sharma secured the Meerut Graduates’ seat. The results allowed the BJP to retain a majority of the seats contested in this round of Legislative Council elections.
Allegations and Disputes During the Elections
The election process also saw allegations of malpractice and administrative manipulation from political leaders. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of electoral malpractice in certain constituencies, while other opposition leaders questioned aspects of the process.
These statements remain allegations and should not be treated as established findings unless supported by official investigations or judicial decisions. The administration maintained that the counting process was being conducted according to the rules, according to reports on the election.
What the Results Mean Ahead of the 2027 Assembly Election
The BJP’s six seats and the SP’s five seats reflect a closely divided outcome in this particular set of MLC contests. Both parties may use the results to reinforce their political messaging ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
However, teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies have a different electorate from Assembly constituencies. The outcome therefore offers insight into these specific electoral contests but cannot, by itself, predict the result of the next state election.
The results are likely to remain part of the political debate as the BJP government and the opposition SP continue to prepare their strategies for the upcoming Assembly polls.
