Arvind Kejriwal to Step Down as Delhi Chief Minister

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal made headlines on Sunday with his unexpected announcement that he will step down as the Chief Minister of Delhi within the next two days. However, Kejriwal assured that he would only take up the chief ministerial position again if the public reaffirms his integrity in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

In his statement, Kejriwal said, “We will go to the people’s court to prove our innocence,” reaffirming his commitment to public accountability and transparency.

Kejriwal’s political career has been nothing short of extraordinary. It began in 2011 when he became a key figure in the India Against Corruption movement, led by activist Anna Hazare. The movement sought to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill, a citizen’s ombudsman to fight corruption. This nationwide campaign brought Kejriwal into the public spotlight as a champion of clean governance and anti-corruption measures.

Inspired by the momentum and ideals of the movement, Kejriwal founded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2012, with the promise of providing an alternative to the traditional political establishment. The party first contested the Delhi Assembly elections in 2013, where it made an impressive debut, winning 28 out of 70 seats. This victory propelled Kejriwal to the position of Delhi’s Chief Minister.

However, his first tenure was short-lived. After just 49 days in office, Kejriwal resigned due to difficulties in passing the very bill that had inspired his political rise—the Jan Lokpal Bill. This resignation drew both praise for his principles and criticism for his abrupt exit.

Kejriwal’s political gamble paid off when, in the 2015 Delhi elections, AAP returned with a sweeping mandate, winning 67 of the 70 assembly seats. It was a stunning victory that reinforced Kejriwal’s popularity and marked the beginning of a more stable administration under his leadership.

Kejriwal was re-elected in 2020, further solidifying his role as a dominant political figure in Delhi. He continues to represent the New Delhi constituency, showcasing his enduring connection with the electorate.

Despite his successes at the state level, Kejriwal‘s journey has not been without challenges. In 2014, he ran unsuccessfully against Narendra Modi in Varanasi during the national elections. Since then, he has frequently clashed with the Modi-led central government and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on several issues, including public appointments and jurisdictional authority. These ongoing disputes have often fueled a narrative of confrontation in Kejriwal’s political career.

As Chief Minister, Kejriwal has been credited with focusing on crucial sectors such as education, healthcare, water, electricity, and infrastructure. His government is particularly praised for launching the Mohalla Clinics initiative, which has made healthcare more accessible to the city’s residents by establishing neighborhood clinics across Delhi.

What’s Next for Kejriwal?

Kejriwal’s decision to step down, pending the public’s reaffirmation of his leadership in the next election, sets the stage for a critical juncture in his political career. With a track record of reform and public engagement, his future hinges on whether Delhi’s voters continue to trust him as the leader who can deliver on promises of clean governance and improved public services.

As he prepares to face the electorate once again, Kejriwal’s political journey remains one to watch, and his next move could reshape the political landscape of Delhi.
