Karnataka Politics: BJP–JD(S) Coordinate for Four Legislative Council Seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] have agreed to jointly contest four Karnataka Legislative Council seats representing Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies. The decision comes as both parties coordinate their election strategy and campaign activities ahead of the upcoming Council polls.

The four constituencies going to polls are Karnataka South-East Graduates’, Karnataka West Graduates’, Karnataka North-East Teachers’, and Bengaluru Teachers’. The election is being conducted for seats representing specific graduates’ and teachers’ electorates, rather than the general electorate used in Assembly elections.

Under the BJP–JD(S) seat-sharing arrangement, the BJP will contest three constituencies, while the JD(S) will contest one seat. The BJP has fielded K. M. Suresh from the South-East Graduates’ constituency, S. V. Sankanur from the West Graduates’ constituency, and Shashil G. Namoshi from the North-East Teachers’ constituency. The JD(S) has nominated A. P. Ranganath for the Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency.

The two parties are also working on coordination between their respective organisational teams and workers in the four constituencies. Leaders have discussed constituency-level responsibilities, campaign planning and voter outreach as part of their joint election strategy.

The Congress is also contesting the four constituencies and has announced candidates for the respective seats. The election will therefore see candidates from the ruling Congress and the BJP–JD(S) alliance competing for representation in the Karnataka Legislative Council.

According to the announced election schedule, polling will take place on October 23, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Counting of votes is scheduled for October 27, 2026. The election process includes nomination and withdrawal stages before polling.

The BJP–JD(S) coordination is also part of the broader political cooperation between the two parties in Karnataka. Their leaders have been holding discussions on organisational coordination and joint political activities. The Council elections provide an opportunity for both parties to coordinate their campaign machinery at the constituency level.

The four constituencies have special electorates consisting of eligible registered graduates and teachers. Voters in these constituencies are required to be included in the relevant electoral rolls according to the applicable Election Commission rules.
