Amid UP Seat-Sharing Talks, Congress–SP Tensions Rise Over Swami Prasad Maurya Meeting

Political tensions have surfaced between the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh as discussions over seat-sharing and alliance coordination continue ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The latest disagreement reportedly emerged after All India Congress Committee (AICC) Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam met former Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya. The meeting has reportedly displeased the SP leadership because of Maurya's strained political relationship with party president Akhilesh Yadav.
The development comes just a day after INDIA bloc parties demonstrated unity at a major rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Narendra Modi-led government over alleged electoral irregularities.
Congress Leader's Meeting With Maurya Upsets Samajwadi Party
Rajendra Pal Gautam's interaction with Swami Prasad Maurya has reportedly created discomfort within the Samajwadi Party.
Maurya is an influential non-Yadav Other Backward Classes (OBC) leader in Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Samajwadi Party after leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and resigning from his ministerial position in the Yogi Adityanath government ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
However, his relationship with the SP leadership deteriorated following controversial remarks about the Ramcharitmanas. In February 2024, Maurya resigned from the Samajwadi Party after the controversy intensified.
At the time, the Akhilesh Yadav-led party reportedly viewed his statements as damaging to its political prospects in Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh Yadav's Political Concerns
The meeting has become sensitive because of Maurya's previous disagreements with Akhilesh Yadav and the circumstances surrounding his departure from the SP.
The Samajwadi Party is a major political force in Uttar Pradesh, and maintaining its organisational position and influence among OBC communities remains important to its electoral strategy.
Congress leaders engaging with former SP leaders could therefore create complications for alliance coordination, particularly when both parties need to establish clear seat-sharing arrangements.
INDIA Bloc Unity Faces a Fresh Test
The disagreement comes at a politically significant moment for the INDIA bloc.
Congress and the Samajwadi Party have worked together as Opposition partners against the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. Their coordination is important for challenging the ruling party in the country's most politically significant state.
However, differences over political leadership, candidate selection, regional influence and seat-sharing have the potential to complicate their alliance.
The reported displeasure within the SP also raises questions about whether Congress leaders are coordinating their political outreach with alliance partners before engaging with leaders who have previously had strained relations with them.
UP 2027 Assembly Election Adds to Alliance Pressure
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, both Congress and the Samajwadi Party face the challenge of balancing their individual political ambitions with the need for Opposition unity.
For Akhilesh Yadav, protecting the SP's political influence and maintaining control over alliance negotiations will be important. Congress, meanwhile, is looking to strengthen its organisational presence and expand its political influence in Uttar Pradesh.
The latest controversy highlights the difficulties facing the INDIA bloc as it attempts to maintain unity while preparing for the next electoral battle.
Whether the Congress and SP can resolve their differences and establish a mutually acceptable seat-sharing arrangement could become an important factor in shaping the Opposition's strategy for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
