BJP-SAD Alliance Talks in Punjab: Seat Sharing Remains Unresolved Ahead of 2027 Election

New Delhi: The possibility of a renewed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) alliance has been a subject of political discussion ahead of the Punjab Assembly Election 2027. An Economic Times report published on August 28, 2026, said the two parties had held discussions on a possible pre-poll arrangement, including seat sharing, constituency allocation and leadership.
However, subsequent public statements from senior BJP leaders have ruled out an alliance for the time being. Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon said in August that the BJP would contest all 117 Assembly seats on its own, while BJP's Punjab in-charge Satish Poonia repeated the same position in September.
The situation therefore remains politically significant, but no BJP-SAD alliance or seat-sharing agreement has been officially announced.
Economic Times Reported Seat-Sharing Discussions
According to the Economic Times report, one round of discussions between BJP and SAD representatives had taken place, with further meetings expected.
The reported discussions covered three major issues: the number of seats each party would contest, the allocation of specific constituencies and the possible leadership arrangement if an alliance were eventually formed.
The report said one proposal under discussion involved 70 seats for SAD and 47 for BJP. This was a reported negotiating proposal and was not a final agreement.
The same report said some SAD leaders viewed the party as the senior or “elder brother” in Punjab because of its longer organisational and electoral presence in the State, while sections within the BJP were seeking a larger share based on the party's increased vote share and organisational expansion.
Kewal Singh Dhillon Rules Out Alliance
The reported discussions were followed by public statements from Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon.
On August 12, Dhillon said the BJP would contest all 117 Assembly seats on its own and stated that there was no alliance with the SAD at that point. His remarks came after SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which had triggered speculation about a possible revival of the former alliance.
Dhillon's position was also reported by The Indian Express, which quoted him as saying that the BJP was preparing to contest the 2027 election independently.
BJP Again Says It Will Contest All 117 Seats
The BJP subsequently repeated its solo-election position.
On August 24, BJP national general secretary (organisation) B. L. Santhosh said the party would contest all 117 Assembly seats in Punjab.
On August 31, BJP Punjab in-charge Satish Poonia also said the party would contest all 117 seats on its own and ruled out an alliance with the SAD and other groups.
On September 2, Poonia again ruled out a BJP-SAD tie-up and said the BJP would contest all 117 Assembly constituencies on its organisational strength.
These statements represent the BJP's publicly stated position as of September 2026.
Sukhbir Badal's Meeting With Narendra Modi
Speculation about a possible BJP-SAD reunion intensified after Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 7, 2026.
The meeting was followed by political discussion about whether the two parties could revive their earlier partnership for the 2027 Punjab election. However, the meeting itself did not result in a publicly announced alliance, and BJP leaders subsequently continued to describe the party's preparations as a solo contest.
BJP and SAD's Previous Alliance
The BJP and SAD had been long-standing political allies in Punjab.
The two parties jointly governed the State during 1997–2002 and again from 2007–2017. Under their traditional arrangement, SAD contested the larger share of Assembly constituencies, while the BJP generally contested around 23 seats, with a significant focus on urban areas.
The alliance ended in September 2020 following disagreements over the three farm laws enacted by the Union government at the time. The laws were subsequently repealed.
The BJP and SAD then contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly election separately, and they also fought the 2024 Lok Sabha election separately.
2024 Lok Sabha Election Provides Electoral Context
The 2024 Lok Sabha results are relevant to the discussion because both BJP and SAD contested independently.
The BJP received 18.56% of the vote in Punjab and won no Lok Sabha seat. The SAD received 13.42% of the vote and won one seat, Bathinda. Their combined vote share was approximately 31.98%.
The BJP also finished first in 24 Assembly segments during the 2024 Lok Sabha election, despite not winning any of Punjab's 13 parliamentary constituencies.
These figures provide electoral data for assessing the parties' respective positions, but combined vote share does not necessarily translate into the same result in an Assembly election. The transferability of votes between alliance partners and constituency-level factors would remain separate questions.
Seat-Sharing Formula Remains Unconfirmed
The 70-47 formula mentioned in the August 28 Economic Times report should therefore be treated as a reported proposal from the discussions, not as an agreed arrangement.
There is also no confirmed constituency-wise allocation between BJP and SAD.
The later public statements from Dhillon and Poonia indicate that the BJP's declared position remains that it will contest all 117 seats independently.
Leadership Question Also Remains Open
The leadership arrangement would be another issue if the two parties were to revive their alliance.
Earlier reporting indicated that sections of the SAD favoured Sukhbir Singh Badal for the Chief Ministerial role if the party received the larger share of seats. Discussions about a possible Deputy Chief Minister's position were also reported.
However, since no alliance has been formally announced, there is no officially agreed Chief Ministerial or Deputy Chief Ministerial arrangement between BJP and SAD for the 2027 election.
Punjab Politics Ahead of the 2027 Election
The BJP-SAD discussion is taking place alongside preparations by the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, SAD, BJP, BSP and other political groups for the Punjab Assembly election.
The BJP is expanding its organisation across the State and has publicly announced preparations for all 117 constituencies. SAD is also preparing independently while the possibility of a future understanding with BJP remains a subject of political discussion and media reporting.
As of September 2026, however, there is no officially confirmed BJP-SAD pre-poll alliance.
Current Position on BJP-SAD Alliance
The available reporting shows two distinct developments.
First, the Economic Times reported in August that BJP and SAD representatives had held discussions on a possible alliance and seat-sharing arrangement. Second, BJP leaders subsequently made public statements saying that the party would contest all 117 seats independently.
Therefore, the 70-47 seat-sharing proposal should not be presented as a final formula, and the BJP-SAD alliance should not be described as confirmed.
The next significant development would be any official announcement by either party regarding an alliance, seat-sharing arrangement or leadership formula ahead of the Punjab Assembly Election 2027.
Expert View
The BJP-SAD relationship remains unresolved ahead of the Punjab Assembly Election 2027. The Economic Times reported that discussions on seat sharing had taken place, but subsequent BJP statements from Kewal Singh Dhillon and Satish Poonia said the party would contest all 117 seats independently. Therefore, the reported 70-47 formula represents an earlier negotiating proposal rather than a confirmed seat-sharing agreement.
