BJP to Contest All 117 Punjab Assembly Seats on Its Own Strength: Satish Poonia

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reiterated that it will contest all 117 Punjab Assembly seats on its own strength in the 2027 Punjab Assembly election. BJP national general secretary and Punjab organisational in-charge Satish Poonia made the statement on August 31, 2026, while beginning a three-day organisational visit to the state.
Poonia said the party's central leadership had given a clear message that the BJP should prepare to contest all 117 constituencies independently. When asked directly whether this meant the BJP would not enter into an alliance for the Punjab Assembly election, he confirmed that this was the meaning of the party's position.
BJP Reiterates Solo Contest Position
Poonia's statement came amid reports and speculation about a possible political understanding between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ahead of the 2027 Punjab election.
The BJP and SAD were previously alliance partners in Punjab but separated in 2020 following differences over the now-repealed farm laws. The BJP had traditionally contested a smaller number of Assembly seats while the SAD contested a larger share under their earlier alliance arrangement.
Against this background, Poonia said the BJP would prepare to fight all 117 seats independently. He also said that views expressed by individual BJP leaders in favour of an alliance did not represent the current organisational mandate of the party.
Poonia Responds to Alliance Statements
Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and BJP leader Sunil Jakhar had expressed views favouring an alliance with the Akali Dal. Responding to this, Poonia said those were their individual views and that the party's organisational decision would come from the central leadership.
Poonia was also asked about statements from Giani Harpreet Singh, president of SAD (Punar Surjit), regarding alleged discussions with the BJP. Rather than confirming such negotiations, Poonia repeated that the BJP's stated position was to contest all 117 seats on its own strength.
Focus on BJP Organisation in Punjab
Poonia's announcement came during his first organisational tour of Punjab after being given responsibility for the state. His programme included meetings with state leaders, office-bearers, district presidents and other organisational teams.
The BJP said the immediate focus would be on strengthening its organisation from the booth level to the state level and assessing the party's organisational strengths, challenges and priorities ahead of the 2027 election.
BJP Punjab president Kewal Singh Dhillon and Punjab co-in-charge and MLA Narinder Singh Raina accompanied Poonia during his press interaction.
BJP Plans Campaign on Drugs and Corruption
Poonia also outlined issues that the BJP intends to highlight during its Punjab campaign, particularly drug abuse, corruption and law and order.
He said the party was working on a dedicated campaign against drugs and narco-terrorism and would release further details of its plan later. These statements represent the BJP's stated campaign priorities rather than an independent assessment of the issues.
Poonia also referred to the need for a broader plan for Punjab and said the party's future manifesto would include its proposals for the state.
BJP's Current Position on the 2027 Punjab Election
As of August 31, 2026, the BJP's publicly stated position was that it would prepare to contest all 117 Punjab Assembly constituencies independently.
The statement is significant because it came while speculation about possible BJP-SAD cooperation was continuing. However, Poonia did not confirm an alliance and instead repeatedly emphasised the BJP's independent-contest plan.
The BJP's organisational preparations are therefore being conducted on the basis of a statewide contest, while any future change in alliance arrangements would depend on subsequent decisions by the parties.
Punjab Assembly Election 2027
The Punjab Assembly has 117 seats, and the next Assembly election is scheduled for 2027. Political parties are expected to intensify organisational activity, public outreach and campaign preparations as the election approaches.
The BJP's latest statement places its current organisational preparation around contesting all 117 seats independently. The party's campaign is also expected to focus on issues including drugs, governance, corruption, law and order and development.
Expert View
Satish Poonia's August 31 statement establishes the BJP's publicly stated position at that time: preparing to contest all 117 Punjab Assembly seats independently. The statement also came amid reports of possible BJP-SAD discussions, making the distinction between reported speculation and the BJP's officially stated position important when assessing Punjab's political developments.
